Terrific book!
By M. Farrell
I am excited to be the first one to review this book! I loved it! The author Ellen Howard did a tremendous amount of historical research to make this story as authentic as possible. The story is based on an actual boy, Pierre Talon, who lived in the late 1600's. Set in what is now the state of Texas, the story explores a part of history kids will not read about in their history books. I will not go into the specifics of the story as you can read that in the editorial reviews above.
What I want to say is that the book is filled with rich detail, lovely writing and true-to-life characters, some that inspire, some dirty scoundrels. There is plenty of action and I think boys would like this book. It is well-plotted, which makes it a very satisfying read. One thing I loved is how Pierre learns much about human nature by observing the people around him and how they think and act. He grows to understand that people and situations are not clear-cut, but complicated and changing. Howard demonstrates a deft touch in illuminating facets of the human condition.

Riveting historical novel; perfect read for all, esp. boys!
By K. N. Tipper
This beautifully researched novel brings this period of history to life in the most riveting fashion possible. What could be more exciting than the story of a young boy alone in a new world, taken by a wild and strange (to him) people? Danger lived on every page, and I was breathless to find out what would happen. The characters were fully realized and the action never let up. This is the kind of story that truly illustrates just how exciting our American history is--bravo, Ellen Howard!

I loved this book!
By PhyllistheAuthor
I read a lot of books because I am on a committee that evaluates book for the Beacon of Freedom Award, a child-chosen award for historical book. Often, as a professional historican, I'm critical of the lack of good history in book that we review. This book combined a good story and accurate history. In addition, it was about an area of American history that most Americans are unfamiliar with. I highly recommend this book.
