About the Author
Robert Flitney is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer in the UK and a Member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. His early engineering experience involved the operation and maintenance of power and process plants in the marine and frozen food industries. This was followed by 35 years of contract R&D on Fluid Sealing Technology at BHR Group, including 10 years managing this activity.
He has authored or co-authored over 50 papers, presented at international conferences, has been invited to provide the keynote presentation at Sealing Seminars, and was Convenor of the ISO Working Group responsible for reciprocating seal test standards. His current activities include consultancy and training on seals and sealing technology, and he is Technical Editor of Sealing Technology, a monthly newsletter for industry.

Allright, could be better

Allright book. I'm an engineer in the biz, and bought this as a reference.
Pretty much, it's a good overview. Just when it starts getting rolling... they move on to another subject. Unfortunate. Nevertheless, it's allright, and you can just search on google to pick up where they leave off (some of the time).
Note, they clause everything, with do your own testing. While this is true, it gets old reading that five to ten times a chapter.
The elastomer section was basic, but allright. The sealing types was basic, but allright. I was hoping for more, the penultimate specialized book. I guess I have to keep looking.

good for quick references, but flawed

We have a copy of this book at work. It is a good book for quick references.
However, if you are dealing with special applications (i.e. toxic gases or lubricants, etc) you have go to the individual seal supplier for additional technical specifications.
My recommendation would to use:
1) the seal manufacturer
2) engineering forums, such as eng-tips.com
3) ask a specialised engineering company, such as WES Engineering:

Good reference with some checklists on diagnosing seal failures. Parker 0-ring book available online free is another good guide. Worth the buy if you can find it cheap.
