This is a really in-depth review of everything I learned about biology throughout my life ! I was really nice to refresh the memories of how the processes in the human body work, the chemistry of it all. The book is filled with diagrams and pictures, as well as the main points and curiosities regarding each topic. It contains everything about cells, the DNA and the structure of animals and plants. It was a good read !

About the Author
Inge Lotsberg is a Specialist Engineer and Senior Vice President at DNV GL (merger of Det Norske Veritas and Germanischer Lloyd) in Norway. He has more than forty years' practical experience with design and verification of steel structures, linear and non-linear finite element analysis, rule development, fatigue and fracture mechanics analyses, reliability analysis, and laboratory testing. The author or coauthor of 120 refereed papers, he has also served as a member and chairman in committees for the development of fatigue design standards within NORSOK and ISO.

About the Author

Anthony King is a Professor of Sociology at the University of Exeter. He has written on sport, social theory, and the armed forces including his most recent books The Transformation of Europe's Armed Forces (Cambridge University Press 2011) and The Combat Soldier (Oxford University Press 2013). He is currently working on a book on divisional headquarters. He has acted as a mentor and adviser to the armed forces for a number of years including membership of NATO's ISAF RC (South) Prism Cell in 2009-10 in Kandahar.

Pierre Bernac had a long and distinguished career as a singer, specializing in the French song (or mélodie) repertoire. For many years he was incomparable partnered by Francis Poulenc, one of the composers discussed in this book. M. Bernac later taught and gave master classes in Europe and the United States. He died in 1979.

Among eighteen composers whose vocal works are covered in the book are Berlioz, Gounod, Duparc, Chausson, Fauré, Debussy, Satie, Ravel―as well as Poulenc and others. The greater part of each composer's output in the genre is discussed: texts of nearly 200 songs are given in French, with line-for-line verse translations by Winifred Radford, notes on pronunciation, and simple but detailed suggestion for performance and interpretation. Preceding these sections on the songs themselves are three most important chapters on performance and interpretation in vocal music, on singing in French, and on the particular problems involved in the interpretation of French mélodies.

Good for native French singers too

In the Foreword Bernac modestly says that the book "does not claim to be anything more than a guide for English-speaking singers who wish to study a repertoire which may not be very familiar to them". It is in fact far more than that, and French-speaking singers will find his suggestions for interpretation, tempo, expression and dynamics to be invaluable. He has an unerring instinct for when a song merits a few general comments for its interpretation and when it calls for a detailed phrase-by-phrase analysis. His choice of repertoire for inclusion in this relatively compact book is surprisingly comprehensive. Particularly useful are his suggestions for when to use the liaison (final consonants being sounded before a word that begins with a vowel, which happens more frequently in poetic language than in normal speech) and when not to. Liaisons are not always intuitive or obvious, even to those who were born and brought up in French.

The Interpretation of French Song

Pierre Bernac's book is an invaluable resource for all classical singers, voice teachers and vocal coaches. His writing is eloquent and graceful and the facts he offers on French diction and song interpretation are easy to comprehend. The poems of major French poets, set to music by many foremost French composers, are analyzed with guidance on elision and liaison, breath points and interpretation.He also includes a poetic English translation of each poem. Having been fortunate enough to have worked with Pierre Bernac earlier in my singing career, I have complete confidence in his artistic thoughts on all aspects of diction and performance of the French mélodie. My book is falling apart after all these years and I will most certainly buy another! You voice students out there who are interested in performance-GET THIS BOOK!

A most valuable tool

What a wonderful and insightful book this is! The tempi recommended are what blows me away-every one suddenly makes the song fit like a glove. The comments and background info for the composers and individual pieces are very thorough-I only wish there was every French melodie in there, I feel so much more secure with the songs that are included!

Jeff Lewis is Associate Professor of Media and Cultural Studies, and Senior Research Fellow at the Globalism Institute, both at RMIT University, Melbourne.

Great God-Centered Bible Study on Missions

If you have a heart for the world and want to help others grow in learning, this is a well put together, thoughtful study on the God's desire to glorify Himself among all the nations. I tell every student to get this resource and take their friends through it. Easy to use, packed with great discussion, verses to memorize and thoughts to meditate on as you go. If you have taken Perspectives or a missions class in seminary, Jeff has put together a great introduction to the same material, and made it very user friendly to the rest of us. Don't just buy one!

Outstanding perspective on the real God

Jeff Lewis, the author of this study, is a professor of intercultural Christian studies at CalBaptist in Riverside, CA. I have taken his classes a few times, which all have repeating content of God's purpose among the nations; this study was part of a reading assignment for one of those classes.

Jeff has this down, and he does a great job of communicating it. This isn't a lengthy, wordy, or overly-written encyclopedia of "God as I see it," like many authors tend to do. This is a short, supplemental study that points out many lengths of scripture that support the idea of God being global and not just a Christian tribal deity.

If you have an understanding of God's global purposes that stem from Gen. 1:1 and through the Abrahamic covenant, which continue today, then this is a great study to continue in that perspective. If you are new to the idea that God is not a western/American deity but has a purpose for all the world (including Iran, N Korea, etc), then let this be a catalyst for such a perspective to take you through the door to God's biblical, global vision for history.

Stop asking "What can God do for me?"

This book is a fantastic Bible study. It takes a fresh look at God's Word, and it helps the reader learn to have a more global perspective. It isn't "all about me"... God desires for all nations and all peoples to praise His name! Psalm 46:10 is often only partially quoted... "Be still and know that I am God..." the rest of the verse says, "I will be exaulted among the nations, I will be exaulted in the Earth" This study is deep and insightful, and God can really use it to change your life!
