Lack of Heart

Going wrong with the "Chrissy Institute" is hard. The routine is the same; boy gets to the institute and is forced to become a "proper young lady". Usual punishments, standard humiliation and huge amounts of cross-dressing scenes are nicely described. Even though, this book is a little disappointing compared to other books in the series due to the huge amount of "feminized" boy to "real" boy relationships described (easily 60% of the whole story is dedicated to these scenes). There is nothing wrong on those relationships as long as they don't take the place of other equally interesting scenes, such as how hormones change their bodies or their male-to-female psychological transformation.

The illustrations are also disappointing: not enough and not a full portrait of what the character is experiencing (the "cartoon" style shown on the cover is what you get).

Good overall, but one of the most heartless stories of the series.

One that he shouldn't look like a girl. Or act like one. Or even dress in dresses. So to speak of. Surprisingly all the people thought he was a girl. Soon after his vacation he return to the special school. That help him become a girl. And found out who was the one who sent him here.

Best Children's Book Ever!

This is my absolute all-time favorite book from childhood. When I got pregnant the first book I bought for my little guy was this one. Every child must have one. It doesn't follow the usual guidelines for children's literature, which is usually boring and has some obvious moral theme. Higglety Pigglety Pop can be thought of as somewhat nonsensical and stimulating to the imagination. Your little one will love it! The characters are genius.

An "adult" book disguised as a children's book, children will love the illustrations and silly phrases, but only adults will truly appreciate the basic "message". A favorite gift for friends who have everything! I have it shelved along side my tattered copy of "Jonathan Livingston Seagull" - the interpretation changes yearly. Enjoy it with your children!

In the waters of the Atlantic near the Straits of Gibraltar a gigantic cruise liner packed with hundreds of hostages is under the control of a small army of well-armed and trigger-happy terrorists masterminded by a leader who makes the Jackal look like an eagle scout. Among the hostages is the playgirl wife of the US secretary of defense who the terrorists execute on camera before the eyes of the world's media. In the Libyan capital city of Tripoli, al-Sharq, the dictatorial successor to Qaddafi known as the Shark, has two Russian stealth fighters at his command. Called Berkuts or "Golden Eagles," the advanced warplanes are poised to deliver nuclear strikes against the US war fleet lying off the coast of Libya in the Gulf of Sidra.

In the midst of this turmoil, space-based surveillance detects the existence of a nuclear weapon onboard the captured cruise liner. The only wild card is Colonel David Saxon, unpredictable commander of Marine Force One. Kind of lame - Not recommended

Having read several unbelievably good series of books by Barry Eisler, Stephen Hunter & Daniel Silva; I was kind of disappointed in my 1st Alexander read. The story lines were thin and all over the place, there way too many characters, many with corny names. His lack of knowledge about the books firearms (descriptions, manufacturers & caliber) was very distracting to a self proclaimed gun nut like me. I'm no expert on aircraft or warships -but the poor knowledge of small arms details put some doubt in my mind as to those descriptions accuracy. John Rain, Gabriel Allon or Bob Lee Swagger would send the star of this book "David Saxon" home in a body bag! I guess I've been spoiled by the modern masters.

Savage Continent explains why European culture is the way it is.

I very much appreciate the time and energy that was put into this book by the author, Keith Lowe. This book is so well written, methodically organized, and produce an easy read for me. His flow of material makes a smooth reading style allowing of increase comprehension of the topic. Every "Baby Boomer" should read this piece for it will provide much information on how and why European culture is today while traveling through the continent. This six year war was so devastating and impactful, its implications are still apparent today.

The work is divided into four parts which cover the war legacy, vengeance, ethnic cleansing, and civil war. For most Americans today this topic does not relate to anything remotely familiar to them. The American Civil War would be the closest, but nobody is around from this conflict as a witness and it is a more distant time. In Savage Continent it appears the aftermath associated with the Displaced Persons (DP) across Europe and especially the expulsions of Germans from neighboring countries between 1945-49 defies imagination. Basically, there was dehumanization across the entire continent during the war and considerably several years after.

From the safety of the 21st Century we tend to use value systems of today and imagine WW II as a single, unambiguous conflict between the Allies one one side and the Axis on the other. In our minds' eye the motives and allegiances for each are transparent. More like a epic battle between good and evil, but in reality the last portion of this book explains it was more complicated. Hidden within the main conflict were dozens of other more local wars, which in different flavors and motivations were in each country and each region.

I was recommended of this book by John Roth, a traveling acquaintance, when on a WW II Anniversary European tour last summer. This was my first exposure to the detention camps and views of the war I had not previous witnessed. Savage Continent should be read prior to your next trip to Europe to obtain empathy and compassion for what these peoples have been through.

Great selection of German words for effective speaking!

The book contains many useful words to place you in the German situations you want to be in. In that sense, among others, the book is a great source for language skills. Each word not only has a definition but its listed gender and an example sentence. It is a reliable way of fine tuning my ability to converse, interact, live and work in a foreign country. If you are looking to expand your horizons with the German language, this is the book for you.

Great book for beginners

So very easy to understand! A German word is listed with its English translation. Underneath is a sample sentence in German with that word and the English translation of that sentence underneath it. Nouns are labled Feminine, Masculine or Neuter by "f", "m", or "n". Verbs aren't fully conjugated (i.e. "speak": speak, spoken, speaking, will speak, have spoken). There is a small course in verb conjugation in the back of the book, but I would recommend specifically a German verb book for any confusion with German verbs. This book is very basic with its use of verbs. There are so many words in the German language that it's good to have a book to get you started in the right direction. These are very common words which should make speaking and being spoken to in German a lot easier to follow. Get this book.

I think this is a good book to look through and learn words. It would be nice to see more examples for each word. In the Kindle version, readers cannot jump between letters, so therefore it is not useful as a simple dictionary to look-up words.
