DISAPPOINTING
By Mary
Expected Much More from a book touted for horse lovers! Way too much 'artistic' squiggling. Geared towards those who want to fill in a bunch of tiny spaces with color. Some pictures don't even fill the page. Not happy with non-horse abstracts plus duplicate pictures. Save your money and get one of the Dover horse coloring books. I've printed better coloring pages off the Web for FREE.

But this book is so much more intricate and makes me use my imagination. This year, for Christmas, I purchased an Adult Coloring Book for my sisters and Mom. I think they will enjoy them like I do !! :) T

America after the Fall: Painting in the 1930s, by Judith A. Barter

A unique look at America’s quest to carve out an artistic identity during the Depression era

Through 50 masterpieces of painting, this fascinating catalogue chronicles the turbulent economic, political, and aesthetic climate of the 1930s. This decade was a supremely creative period in the United States, as the nation’s artists, novelists, and critics struggled through the Great Depression seeking to define modern American art. In the process, many painters challenged and reworked the meanings and forms of modernism, reaching no simple consensus. This period was also marked by an astounding diversity of work as artists sought styles—ranging from abstraction to Regionalism to Surrealism—that allowed them to engage with issues such as populism, labor, social protest, and to employ an urban and rural iconography including machines, factories, and farms.

Seminal works by Edward Hopper, Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton, Georgia O’Keeffe, Aaron Douglas, Charles Sheeler, Stuart Davis, and others show such attempts to capture the American character. These groundbreaking paintings, highlighting the relationship between art and national experience, demonstrate how creativity, experimentation, and revolutionary vision flourished during a time of great uncertainty.

Let the pictures tell their tales, skip the dissertations
By joseph c maguire
This is a handsome folio, excellent illustration quality. However I found much of the editorials to be very ham handed and overbearing. But it has introduced me to a couple new artists, and revealed pieces by some of my favorite painters that I had never glimpsed before. A solid addition to my collection.

The idea of the exhibition and book is a fine one, but the essays aren't particularly good
By JC
The idea of the exhibition and book is a fine one, but the essays aren't particularly good. The authors may be knowledgeable in art history, but not so much in the history of Great Depression or American history in general. And they seemed to overlook obvious aspects of some of the painting -- that Grant Wood, for example, had a fine wry sense of humor, or that Thomas Hart Benton found as much bitterness in the countryside as he did its good qualities. Nor do the essayists seem to understand that all the painters here were greatly affected by Modernism, and that rather than being backward-looking, the Regionalists, for example, were simply looking in a different direction than the more conventional Modernists. Much of the rumination seems informed by contemporary political issues rather than the situation at the time. The selection of paintings is excellent, and the reproduction is quite good as well.

An Excellent Review with Insigntful Comments
By Ancient_Fossil
This is a gorgeous book by any standards. The reproductions are quite good and the authors have done a grand job illustrating a grand period of mid-century, American art. I highly recommend this work. I have waited years to see all these paintings together and I am very pleased. We had a wonderful time visiting this exhibition and were inspired by almost every work.

A pleasant surprise.
By SCWillson
In a superhero genre that is steadily increasing in both material and the proportion of junk published, this book was a nice discovery. I read a lot of superhero fiction, and this book is definitely in the top tier. In fact the only only series I'd rate better are Marion Harmon's brilliant Wearing the Cape and Richard Roberts' Please Don't Tell My Parents I'm a Supervillain.

The first book was excellent; the author will have his work cut for him making the sequels as good. I wish him luck.

By Mike
I read this book in 30 minutes. 303 pages my ass.

I really wanted to like the book regardless of feeling ripped of on how short it was, but I simply can't. The writing is horribly fast, the book felt like a summary written by a bad middle school student. It is like the author purposely used the absolute bare minimum of words to tell his story. Descriptions of anything are few and far between, I think he mentioned peoples hair color once; and the "action" in the book is just ridiculously bland.

If I thought I could get a refund I'd ask for it.

The "novella" was fine. Plot was interesting and characters were being developed
By Rowan
I'm feeling a little short changed. This said the book was 302 pages. It is clearly only 50-60 pages.

The "novella" was fine. Plot was interesting and characters were being developed. But I cannot get over the lie about the length.

Gr 9 Up—Skybright never knew her parents. She was raised by an affluent Chinese family who took her into their home to be a handmaid to their daughter, Zhen Ni. The two grew up as close as sisters, best friends and confidants who shared everything. Skybright loves her mistress, but as both girls grow up, changes start to occur. While Zhen Ni finds love in a new friendship, Skybright discovers a new side of herself, one filled with darkness. She fights to balance her duties, the love she has for another, and this evil within herself. Skybright struggles to maintain her true self, as well as to hide what she is becoming from her closest friend. The teen doesn't know who she is anymore. Is she a servant, a friend, a lover, or a demon? Could she be all of these things, or must she choose one? This coming-of-age story takes readers on a fantastical journey through friendship and Chinese mythology. YA fans will love Pon's storytelling ability and the immersion into a world filled with love, danger, and fantasy. VERDICT Readers will be begging for a sequel to find out what happens to these intriguing characters.—Jessica Strefling, US Court of Appeals, Federal Circuit Library (starred review)

Review
"This fast-paced fantasy adventure is set in an ancient China of folklore, the same land as Pon’s previous books. Pon’s descriptive writing conjures precise images, as in when describing Skybright’s transformation from human to serpent: “Smooth scales rippled over her human flesh, like dragonfly wings fluttering their way from her feet to cover her abdomen.”At its core, the novel is about friendship, loyalty, and self-acceptance, with characters as delightfully real as any in the realm of young adult literature." —Diane Colson, VOYA Magazine (starred review)

“The economical narrative conjures an entire world, drenched in color and texture and scent, rich in evocative mythology and heady action, and filled with vivid characters . . . A fast-paced and engrossing read for anyone weary of the same old hackneyed storylines.”  —Kirkus Reviews

"Serpentine's world oozes with lush details and rich lore, and the characters crackle with life. This is one story that you'll want to lose yourself in."  —Marie Lu, author, Prodigy

“Vivid worldbuilding, incendiary romance, heart-pounding action, and characters that will win you over--I highly recommend Serpentine.”   —Cinda Williams Chima, author, The Warrior Heir

"Serpentine is unique and surprising, with a beautifully-drawn fantasy world that sucked me right in! I love Skybright's transformative power, and how she learns to take charge of it.”  — Kristin Cashore, author, Bitterblue

“YA fans will love Pon's storytelling ability and the immersion into a world filled with love, danger, and fantasy. Readers will be begging for a sequel to find out what happens to these intriguing characters.”  —School Library Journal (starred review)

Strong on setting but characters and relationships fell flat.
By Stephanie A.
I was excited to read SERPENTINE because of the setting, which is based in large part on China. I wasn’t disappointed in this respect, but the setting was the only part of the book I was really able to get into.

From the beginning, we’re immersed in the setting. I loved how well the details came to life all throughout the story, and it was nice to read a fantasy novel that wasn’t based on Europe. It also made me want to learn more about Chinese history, which isn’t something I’m as familiar with.

I wasn’t into the characters at all. I realize that, as a handmaiden, Skybright is expected to fade into the background so as not to overshadow her mistress. But we spend the whole book in her head, so I was hoping there’d be more going on with her. For me, there wasn’t. She spends the whole book centered on the people around her – first her mistress, Zhen Ni, and then the boy she falls in love with, Kai – and we don’t really get to know who Skybright really is. While that isn’t necessarily unrealistic, it didn’t make for the most interesting narration.

Also, the romance between Skybright and Kai fell flat for me, in large part because of my aforementioned issues with Skybright. The romance felt really underdeveloped for this reason. We also don’t get to know Kai very well; all I got was that he trains with the monks and that he’s fascinated by Skybright, so I couldn’t get into his character, either.

The subplot with Zhen Ni was interesting, though. I don’t want to spoil it, so I won’t give specifics, but I’ll say that it was explored very well through Skybright’s eyes.

I think people who prefer quieter heroines will probably have more luck with this one than I did.

Features a fantastic friendship
By Zoey Talbon
Reviewing Serpentine is hard because I didn't have particularly strong feelings about it in either direction. In the beginning, I thoroughly enjoyed the writing but wasn't totally invested in the story. And that's pretty much how it went the entire way. The story definitely did get more intriguing, but it didn't feel as if it had enough intricate and fleshed-out details to seem believable, and so instead I found myself rolling my eyes sometimes.

Still, the mythology of Serpentine is something I haven't seen a ton of before, which was refreshing. I felt so immersed in the setting and could picture it so easily. The dark forests, the huge manor, the monks right next door. I know I already used the word refreshing, but it applies here as well.

Another good thing that Serpentine does? It tells its tale through the handmaiden rather than the privileged girl who owns the handmaiden. It's obviously not the first book to do so, but that doesn't mean it wasn't a nice break from the upper class. However, Skybright and her mistress, Zhen Ni, are practically sisters. They've known each other since they were babies, grown up together. But there's still a pretty big divide, if you ask me. Zhen Ni is still a mistress. Skybright can never herself marry or have children, and sometimes I feel like the book didn't really make a big enough deal of that. Now, those are things that I don't personally want, but the thing is that I have that choice. I have an option to want it, to do it someday. Skybright never has.

Nevertheless, Skybright and Zhen Ni have quite a strong connection. Until, of course, they both start keeping their own secrets from each other. You just know that's not going to end well.

As characters, I didn't find either of them particularly interesting. Maybe it's because I couldn't connect to them, I don't know. But not a single one of the characters in Serpentine was particularly remarkable to me. I didn't hate them, no. Skybright's love for Zhen Ni and her strength as she dealt with her own changes were important, sure. But beyond that I just . . . didn't care much, I guess. I was intrigued to find out what was going on with Skybright, where the story would go. But that wasn't really about her.

The romance is probably where I have the strongest feelings, because it was just so unbelievable to me. It happened too fast and I didn't feel a genuine connection. I rolled my eyes. Quite a bit. They meet and talk a handful of times throughout the entire novel. In the beginning, Skybright sees Kai Sen for the first time from very far away and she suddenly can't stop thinking about him. Which kind of set the tone for the entire romance. And, of course, a third party sort of enters the picture and I just. WHY. NO THANKS.

Of course, Serpentine also features a f/f relationship. YAY! FINALLY! I feel as if we didn't see enough of one of the characters involved, but it was still something nice to see, and it actually does play a part. (AKA it doesn't feel as if it was just thrown in to check off a box.) It's so unfamiliar to many of the characters in the book, unacceptable to some. It was a little heartbreaking to see the damage that simple love between two people could cause.

Plotwise and in terms of what's happening to Skybright, it had its weak moments and its stronger moments. The stronger moments were definitely at the end where there were a few plot twists.

tl;dr: Serpentine brings a lot of fresh stuff to the table - new mythology, a great setting, a f/f relationship. It features a strong female friendship. But for me, there's a bit of an execution problem. It was hard for me to stay interested and the romance between Skybright and Kai Sen wasn't believable. Still, I enjoyed the writing for the most part and did find a lot of stuff refreshing. Will I be reading the sequel? Probably not. But I do think Serpentine deserves 3 stars.

A wonderful YA read for all ages
By Deborah
The enchantment of Serpentine is not just the shape-changers and demons that inhabit Pon's world, but her ability to transport people of all ages into a YA (young adult) world with such compelling characters and plot that I found this as difficult to put down as any suspenseful adult novel.

Skybright is a teenage handmaiden to a privileged girl, Zhen Ni, enjoying a sheltered existence in a comfortable home. Skybright, an orphan, has been raised alongside Zhen Ni since birth but, despite the closeness between the two girls, immutable cultural distinctions eventually create a barrier between mistress and servant. At sixteen, the dramatic changes that occur to Skybright’s body make her question her sanity and force her to keep secrets from Zhen Ni and the rest of the household. Her choices plunge her into an unimaginable world of magical creatures, leading to a dangerous quest that has consequences not just for herself but for all those she cares about.

I loved the pace of this book, its characters and the world that the author created, richly textured with deft brushstrokes, defined and real but with enough restraint to allow the reader’s imagination to fill the spaces. I cannot wait for a sequel.

Christ has designed a ‘home’ or family for his people, described in these pages as an accomplishment of divine genius. This is a magnificent subject, vital to spiritual growth and blessing and also to our service for the Saviour.

This book answers many questions about churches and church membership in New Testament times. Next to having a real walk with Christ and knowing the doctrines of the faith, membership of a good church has a powerful formative influence on the believer’s life.

Interesting Overview of Church Membership
By Dr. Mark Redd
Enjoyed the Scriptural approach in dealing with the Body of Christ. Interesting approach to tie in "local church body" with references and expectation of universal body of Christ. High view of Covenant in a Local Church body. Good food for thought! Well written.

From the Back Cover
Following the tremendous popular success of Jane Eyre, which earned her lifelong notoriety as a moral revolutionary, Charlotte Bronte vowed to write a sweeping social chronicle that focused on "something real and unromantic as Monday morning". Set in the industrializing England of the Napoleonic wars and Luddite revolts of 1811-12, Shirley (1849) is the story of two contrasting heroines. One is the shy Caroline Helstone, who is trapped in the oppressive atmosphere of a Yorkshire rectory and whose bare life symbolizes the plight of single women in the nineteenth century. The other is the vivacious Shirley Keeldar, who inherits a local estate and whose wealth liberates her from convention. A work that combines social commentary with the more private preoccupations of Jane Eyre, Shirley demonstrates the full range of Bronte's literary talent.

About the Author
Charlotte Bronte (1816-55) was an English novelist, the eldest of the three Bronte sisters whose novels have become enduring classics of English literature.

From AudioFile
Performances like this solidify the notion that much of classic literature translates beautifully to audio. Bront‘Õs rich language and multi-layered plot fairly sing in the care of talented narrator Anna Bentinck, whose clear tones enliven each character, no matter how small his or her role. With an added lilt, a quickened pace, or an altered enunciation, Bentinck moves gracefully from one character to another and makes any bit of narration sparkle. Words that might seem stilted or stuffy on the page become as energetic as the social interactions of Bront‘Õs Yorkshire. Growing industrialization is juxtaposed with relationship woes as the title character yearns for love. All in all, this audiobook is full of plot twists and memorable characters. A Phenomenal, Complicated Novel
By mp
Charlotte Brontë's 1849 novel "Shirley" really delivers on the already realized potential of her first novel, "Jane Eyre." Though the novel is named for the character Shirley Keeldar, the novel really has no one set protagonist - the duties are mostly shared in the relationship between the fiesty and wealthy Shirley, and the lovelorn Caroline Helstone. Set against a backdrop of social and economic unrest, as the swelling ranks of the unemployed react against increasing mechanization of mill production, "Shirley" takes in a broad range of national and international issues. Even when the personal and romantic narratives seem to dominate the novel, Brontë does an extraordinary job of keeping the questions of social discontent present to the reader.
"Shirley" opens on a view of Briarfield, a small mill community in Yorkshire, where the labourers are restless and hungry. The mill owners, Robert Moore and Hiram Yorke, are anxious with reports of murderous actions against mechanizing mill owners elsewhere, and suffering under governmentally restricted trade. The gentry are disaffected with the mill owners, and more concerned with England's continuing conflicts with Napoleon overseas. The main concerns of the novel revolve around all of these conflicts - conflicts of interest, conflicts between classes, and the wider conflicts of nations. Brontë's social vision seems to ask throughout the novel if any of the normal sorts of personal problems even matter in the face of the sufferings of the masses.
Briarfield's leading citizen is Reverend Helstone; he along with a motley mix of curates accurately represents the microcosmic problem that affects the macrocosm of England in the time of the novel, 1811-12. Helstone is rigidly hierarchical in his mindset, and suffers from a peculiar affliction as a religious man - a total lack of sympathetic attachment to the community he ministers to. His niece, Caroline, who stands to inherit no fortune, is singular also, in that her social standing coupled with her lack of money places her in an awkward position with regard to her potential love interest, Robert Moore. With the advent of the wealthy and independent Shirley, who attracts the affections and avarice, respectively, of Caroline and Robert, new avenues of personal tension enter the already conflicted society of Briarfield.
Gender troubles are rife in the novel - from Shirley's adoption of the tone and stance of a masculine inheritor, a military captain, and a protector of Caroline; to the rabid misogyny of Reverend Helstone, Martin Yorke, and the curate Malone, among others; and the wild invectives against marriage from a variety of sources - Brontë shows that regardless of intranational or international disputes, the seeds of discord are plentiful within the domestic spaces of potentially every English home. Brontë examines the lack and need for strong maternal presence, emphasizing the fact that Shirley's parents are dead, and Caroline has never known her own mother, except as the butt of foul rumours. The gender-fueled critique in "Shirley" extends even to the characters' notions of the divine - the male religious authorities are contrasted with the oracular and ancient image of the feminine sibyl.
"Shirley" may, in the end, be the name chosen for the novel, not because she is its main character, but because she symbolizes and embodies the social, political, gender, and ecological complexities and conundrums present throughout the novel. For a 600-page novel, "Shirley" is an incredibly quick and compelling read. Certainly, it deserves a wider readership and pays a close attention with fuel for consideration and thoughtful discussion.

A very engaging read!
By Tracy Marks
I loved this book, though admittedly it reads a bit like a rough draft with several stories which are not very well integrated. In the introduction, Bronte claims Shirley is anything but a romance, and indeed the first few chapters are so dry (focusing on the very minor and not very interesting characters of the vicars and other religious personnel) that one needs patience to continue reading.

Indeed this is understandable given that Charlotte's beloved sisters Anne and Emily and her beloved but wayward brother Branwell all died the year she wrote the first half of the novel, and she was shutting down emotionally and withdrawing from the world. Later when she wrote the last half, she was past the deepest stage of grief.

Bronte also doesn't introduce her heroine Shirley until 1/3 of the way through the novel, establishes considerable interest in the character of Robert Moore, and then has him disappear most of the second half of the novel, and introduces another major character, Robert's brother in the last portion of the book.

Finally, one sometimes has to strain to believe that individuals at this time really spoke as these characters spoke - especially the men when they on rare occasion pour out their hearts to other men in lengthy poetic prose. But often the prose of Bronte's dialogue is quite delicious and makes one wish that writers today had such a flair for such eloquent, emotionally expressive language.

The strong point of the novel: Charlotte Bronte excels in letting us into the mind and hearts of her two heroines, Caroline and Shirley, as well as in painting portraits of several of other characters, especially Robert Moore. Her rich attunement to the subtleties of the inner life of feeling (especially falling in love and the roller coast ride of affectionate rapport alternating with anguish-inducing withdrawal) and the innuendos of relationships between women and women, and men and women, is notable. Her portrayals of her primary characters are so compelling that her readers begin to deeply care about them and their happiness. The relationship between Robert and Caroline is particularly engaging, and likely to lead the reader to yearn, along with Caroline, for Robert to stand firm in his affections and not retreat into his very real and troublesome business and financial concerns.

The political subplot is also enlightening - a basically good man, Robert Moore, being drawn almost to bankruptcy while needing to industrialize his mill in order to remain in business, and as a result laying off workers and inciting a luddite rebellion against him. (Readers who are intrigued by this theme, might also enjoy Gaskell's North and South - and especially the BBC North and South film available on dvd). Bronte doesn't integrate the political plot very well with the novel, but socio-economic factors considerably influence Robert's motives and relationships more and more as the story progresses. They also lend historical interest to the novel, and a bit of substance beyond the local color of minor individuals, the relationships between the main characters, and the very heartfelt inner life of Caroline.

Although most other readers find the book slow reading, I in contrast could barely put it down.......but did skip over the "boring" parts resulting from too many minor characters (especially of a religious nature) being given too much space in the novel. But the stories of Caroline, Robert and Shirley are so engaging that the reader may indeed find the novel truly delightful, and the conclusion likewise highly satisfying.

Don't be put off by the first chapters
By A Customer
While I loved this book, there were some things I didn't like, but none that mean it doesn't deserve five stars. This is my favourite Charlotte Bronte book. i believe there is too much focus on Jane Eyre, or perhaps even Villette. There are a few coincidences in this story, especially one, which I can't mention without giving away part of the story. However these are common in CB, Villette being overun with them, and Jane Eyre ending up on the doorstep of her long lost cousins. Shirley is more believable. Another comment it the long speeches the characters often make. Apart from these though, this is one of my most loved books. It has been neglected, I feel, by the fact that the first 50 pages are very difficult to read, after that though, the story becomes apparent, and it's worth it. Something strange is that the heroine of the title doesn't appear, and is not mentioned until page 200, although she fairly dominates the rest of the book. Perhaps 'Shirley and Caroline' would have been a more appropriate title

Overcoming Law, by Richard A. Posner

Legal theory must become more factual and empirical and less conceptual and polemical, Richard Posner argues in this wide-ranging new book. The topics covered include the structure and behavior of the legal profession; constitutional theory; gender, sex, and race theories; interdisciplinary approaches to law; the nature of legal reasoning; and legal pragmatism. Posner analyzes, in witty and passionate prose, schools of thought as different as social constructionism and institutional economics, and scholars and judges as different as Bruce Ackerman, Robert Bork, Ronald Dworkin, Catharine MacKinnon, Richard Rorty, and Patricia Williams. He also engages challenging issues in legal theory that range from the motivations and behavior of judges and the role of rhetoric and analogy in law to the rationale for privacy and blackmail law and the regulation of employment contracts. Although written by a sitting judge, the book does not avoid controversy; it contains frank appraisals of radical feminist and race theories, the behavior of the German and British judiciaries in wartime, and the excesses of social constructionist theories of sexual behavior.

Throughout, the book is unified by Posner's distinctive stance, which is pragmatist in philosophy, economic in methodology, and liberal (in the sense of John Stuart Mill's liberalism) in politics. Brilliantly written, eschewing jargon and technicalities, it will make a major contribution to the debate about the role of law in our society.

Review
Judge Posner's book...is about the economics of practicing and studying law: the incentives and disincentives faced by judges, lawyers and law professors. The book describes the legal profession as a collapsing cartel, a decadent guild coming to terms with market competition...It is by far the best--the most scholarly, the most thoughtful, as well as the sharpest and most provocative--of the current crop of commentaries on the plight of law today. (Jeremy Waldron New York Times Book Review)

Overcoming Law collects Richard Posner's major articles and essays from recent years. While the book is an assemblage of smaller pieces, "it is meant to be read consecutively" and in fact lays out a distinct and formidable theme: a view of law Posner describes as "pragmatic" rather than formalistic or ideological...One lingering aftertaste of the book is that political and intellectual labels in our time have been degraded almost beyond recognition. Another, and stronger, is that Posner is the real thing: a philosopher and intellectual who despite his immense learning has retained a strong sense of the humane and the decent. If that is pragmatism, then we need more of it. (Paul Reidinger ABA Journal)

Reflecting the breadth of the author's interest, the book ranges widely through the law and beyond...Posner is clearer here than in any of his previous work that there is--that there must be--more to the practice of judging than economics, or any similarly formal deductive system, can provide...His ideas are surely worth a look. (David G. Post Reason)

Overcoming Law takes the reader on a dazzling intellectual tour. Judge Richard Posner offers fascinating commentary on subjects ranging from the law of medieval Iceland to the legal community of the contemporary South Bronx. His interests range from the organization of legal services to the economics of homosexuality. Moreover, Posner is an exceptionally accessible and civil guide to this remarkable range of legal concerns. (Mark A. Graber Law and Politics Book Review)

A dazzling collection of recent essays...Richard Posner is the most prolific and creative judge now sitting on the federal bench. The essays in Overcoming Law, like everything he writes, are exhilarating in their range and wit and candor. (Jeffrey Rosen Yale Law Journal)

Overcoming Law is an extraordinary book, brimming with stimulating ideas on almost every page. I couldn't put it down. The book will trigger some significant national debates, especially given the blazing attacks the author delivers on the limitations of contemporary legal education and the deficiencies of contemporary legal thought, including that manifested by the Supreme Court. In breadth of interest, he can be compared only to people like Holmes, William O. Douglas, Jerome Frank, and Joseph Story. (Sanford Levinson, University of Texas at Austin Law School)

Overcoming Law is as good as anything being written about law and legal scholarship today. The essays go for the intellectual jugular; they're sometimes devastatingly witty; and on occasion, even passionate. Posner is a towering figure in American law, both as a judge and as a scholar, and one of his greatest merits has been his capacity for intellectual growth. This book demonstrates a major development in his thought. (Daniel Farber, University of Minnesota Law School)

Great essays. His other books are better.
By Kevin Currie-Knight
Another reviewer noted that this is the best intro to Posner. It probably is. The essays here touch on legal reasoning, economics, philosophy of law, sexuality and many other topics, giving the reader a 'survey' view of Posner. Most books of essays, though, have a cohesiveness that I did not detect here, which is fine, so long as the intention is ONLY to get a sampling.
I can not stress enough how phenomenal a writer Judge Posner is. The essays are both challenging and readable; contraversial yet objective. In one, Posner defends his book 'Sex and Reason' against radical feminism. In another he examines Richard Rorty and the impact that modern philosophy has on law. Perhaps the best essay is on pragmatic legal reasoning, entitled "What am I? A potted plant?'.
Besides the lack of cohesion, the biggest reason for the subtracted star is that, while Posner discusses economics, legal method and gender issues, his full length books on the subjects are better. Respectively, they are "The Economics of Justice", "The Problems of Jurisprudence" and "Sex and Reason." For the student of any one of these areas, read those first, read this after. Everyone else, start here!

Judge Posner at his best (or worst?)
By A Customer
One of the few works that lives up to expectations! Provides Judge Posner's wonderful insights into almost all subjects touching upon the law while avoiding the rambling style which marred his The Problems of Jurisprudence. Posner once again shows that he does not fear taking controversial positions or picking fights. One of the few books that delivers intellectual meat without losing a sense of humor. Accessible and frank style make it a joy to read. Highly recommended for anyone with even a passing interest in the law, the workings of the judicial system, philosophy, or economics

Readable, even if you do not agree with the Judge
By Edward G. Nilges
Judge Posner is in the news these days because he has served as a mediator in the Microsoft trial. He is both a public intellectual and a judge, as well as one of the leading philosophers of the movement in legal theory called "Law and Economics."
This is an admirable record, and one way the judge has built his reputation is by being a prolific and readable writer on law. Overcoming Law is one of the best summaries of his work because as a series of essays, the reader is at liberty to dip into the most interesting topics.
Understanding law and economics is a prerequisite. This is Posner's (and Ronald Coase's) idea that descriptively, judges try to maximize social wealth by allocating to claimants the results that those claimants are most willing to pay for. Prescriptively, to Posner, this is a Good Thing.
Solomon in the Bible acted in a Posnerian fashion because the "good" mother valued her child's life over her possession of the child whereas the bad mother valued her possession over the kid's life. Posner would not say that Solomon saw the abstract good and made a decision according to his conception of the abstract good (which Posner feels can be flawed.) Instead Posner would say that Solomon found a decision procedure which revealed the true values of the claimants.
This makes sense. What makes less sense is that Posner turns Marx's theories on their head, and this is rather dizzying, since Marx turned Hegel on his head. In Posner's ideal world, any atomic business transaction reveals that actor A values product or service P more than B does if B transfers that product or service at price R.
Better critics than I have pointed out that economic actors who are acting close to the bone, such that they must work or trade, or die, may not value their mininum wage more than the service they render. They may value the time highly but sacrifice it anyway as a precondition for their existence. As Kant would say, existence is not a predicate, but a precondition to having predicates. Translated to the economic sphere, existence is not a Yuppie luxury, like an SUV, nor is it a necessity like bread. It is a precondition for having either.
Posner writes, I believe, from the standpoint of the lucky American who has never had to face extinction as a consequence of the economy and this gives his thought a certain lack of heart which is also a failure to think things through.
This is most on display in Posner's essay "Hegel and Employment at Will." Here, Posner speaks directly to legal philosophers including Drucilla Cornell who have made a case, based on the thought of Hegel, for property rights to jobs. Posner's defense of employment at will (which was thought, as recently as 1980, to be an out of date theory) is based on nothing more than an empirical, and questionable, economic claim: that we enjoy higher economic growth in America as a consequence of employment at will.
This is to be misled by the numbers, for many observers of European societies (with their social welfare programs and longer vacations) have pointed out that qualitatively, the consequent higher unemployment in Europe does NOT seem to lead to a high level of misery. In Japan, during the last ten years, that country has been in deep recession, with high unemployment, but qualitative commentators have noticed that the Japanese react differently than Americans have done.
Posner tends to accept high levels of employment which result from churning in the employment market as a good thing. As a sitting judge with probable lifetime tenure, Posner does not see the disruption that results from employment at will...even to businesses themselves.
In general, Posner is a clever and readable ideologue and apologist for Reagan-era ideology. No matter what your views on these changes it is a very good idea to read Judge Posner...if only to be able to spot arguments which use his thought, and to show (as does philosopher Martha Nussbaum) that by their lack of qualitative, and even ethical, reflection, they lack the rationality they claim.
