Home Work: Handbuilt Shelter, by Lloyd Kahn

Home Work is our sequel to Shelter and illustrates new and even more imaginative ways to put a roof over your head, some of which were inspired by Shelter itself. What Shelter was to ’60s counterculture, Home Work is to the “green building revolution,” and more. From yurts to caves to tree houses to tents, thatched houses, glass houses, nomadic homes, and riverboats, each handbuilt dwelling finds itself at one with its environment, using natural materials.

Master builder Louie Frazier's Japanese-style pole house in Northern California, reachable on a 500-foot cable across a river / Ian MacLeod's handbuilt stone house in South Africa, where baboons jump on the roof at night / Ma Page's bottle house in the Nevada desert / Artist Michael Kahn's semi-subterranean sculptural village in Arizona / Bill and Athena Steen's strawbale houses / Ianto Evans' cob houses in Oregon / The Archlibre group of countercultural builders in the French Pyrenees / Bill Coperthwaite's spectacular 3-story yurt in the Maine woods / Bill Castle's finely-crafted log home and sauna in the NY Appalachians / a commune in the Tennesee mountains / The "Flying Concrete" brothers in Mexico and their far-out sculptural structures / Barns in California, Washington, and Connecticut / Photo-essays of Lloyd Kahn's trips to Nevada, the Mississippi Delta, Costa Rica, Nova Scotia, and Baja California / Photos of buildings all over the world by photographers Yoshio Komatsu and Kevin Kelly / and much more

Home at Last
By Kelly Hart
After years of waiting, I finally held a copy of Home Work: Handbuilt Shelter by Lloyd Kahn in my hands. I have rarely been this enthusiastic about a book, and not just because I am in it!

Ever since his first publication of Shelter in 1973 (which I also contributed to), Lloyd has been collecting imagery and stories for this eventual sequel. Shelter, a black and white over-sized catalog of unusual building, has become legendary as a book of inspiration for several generations of free-spirited home builders. The fact that it is still in print after 30 years attests to the durability of its significance. This seminal book heralded the emergence of geodesic domes and strawbale homes, as well as the influence of vernacular building styles from around the world on North American architecture.

With Home Work, Lloyd has gone beyond the glory of his earlier work in many ways. Not only does it seem more comprehensive, but it is almost entirely in color. This is a sumptuous coffee table book that will likely not spend much time on the table, since it is so intriguing you just want to pick up and browse through it. Every page is chock full of fun, unusual, lyrical, quaint, artistic, humble, elegant, practical, colorful, whimsical, well-crafted, funky, traditional, and outlandish buildings that were lovingly built by the hands of those who reside there. All of this is presented with Lloyd's casual style of layout and commentary that is reminiscent of a scrap book. Many of the photos are actually collages of several exposures spliced together to create expansive murals.

Flipping through the pages of Home Work will take you back to the early day of hippie huts and forward to the cutting edge of natural building technology. The builders themselves are portrayed as lovingly as their buildings, with many profiles of fine craftsmen and women sprinkled throughout. In fact, the book begins by featuring the work of ten artisans who represent some of the best in this tradition of owner-builders. Then a whole slew of other specific homes are displayed in such a way that the lifestyle of their occupants is embedded directly within the imagery. This book depicts far more than architecture; it shows entire ways of life.

Half a dozen people who have dedicated their lives to the promotion of natural building are profiled, along with some of the fruit of their labors. It is in this section that my wife and I find ourselves, with a description of our earthbag/papercrete home. What an honor it is to be part of such a fine work of art as this book. We are in the company of Bill and Athena Steen, Catherine Wanek, Ianto Evans and Linda Smiley, and others.

Lloyd has included examples of a variety of world-renowned photographers whose work graces the pages with imagery from India, Mongolia, Togo, Indonesia, Vietnam, Venezuela, New Guinea, Greece, Hong Kong, Nepal, Bali, Germany, Thailand, and Turkey, among other places. The way these exotic places are merged with the more familiar North American imagery makes everything seem exotic, or in another way of seeing, it all seems quite normal.

There is a section of buildings that derive their inspiration from fantasy and whimsy. This includes the surprising and almost garish flying concrete work of Steve Kornher in Mexico, along with a sculptural home carved out of the Arizona desert created by Michael Kahn, Lloyd's cousin. A Nevada house made of recycled glass bottles contrasts with delicate tropical treehouses in Hawaii and China.

Then we go on the road with Lloyd, as he chronicles trips that he made over the last 30 years. He photographed country homes that caught his eye along the Mississippi River, lovely and simple architectural elegance in Nova Scotia, old farm buildings of Utah and Nevada, tropical abodes in Costa Rica, and simple living in Baja California.

Continuing with the tradition that Lloyd established in the original Shelter book, there are a bunch of images of unusual housecars or rolling residences. My original school bus home was featured in the first book. This time there is a donkey train pulling a rolling homestead, complete with goats and chickens. There are several gypsy wagons, both self-propelled and not. There is log home on wheels, as well as various buses and vans. Lots of fun.

A chapter on living lightly features descriptions and diagrams of tipis, yurts, tents, make-shift structures, and traditional native American homes. There is enough information in these pages to be able to construct many of these dwellings.

Another love that Lloyd manifests is for old barns of all types. There are photos and diagrams of many of these fine buildings. In fact old buildings of all sorts attract his eye, and we see them from Oregon to Nepal, and from Hungary back to California, where Lloyd still resides in a funky little place on the coast of Marin County. Thank you Lloyd Kahn for such a wonderful trip!

Lloyd Kahn Understand You.
By Jackson Landers
This is the best book of it's type that I have encountered. There are a lot of people out there building interesting structures with their own hands in their own way. For those who either are doing this or aspire to it, there isn't much out there in the way of books or cheerleading.

'Home Work' focuses largely on interesting homes built by baby-boomers who may or may not call themselves hippies, but are generally coming out of the 'back to the land' movement of the 60's and 70's that is generally associated with that subculture. This may or may not have been intentional on the part of the author. There is also a heavy West-coast bias at work. Every builder profiled seems to have a sauna & a beard and I could swear there's a pot plant in the foreground of one of the photos.

Honestly the stuff that the hippies started building 30 years ago is probably the cream of the 'interesting' owner-built homes in America. They had the will to build on their own, the low budgets that force creativity and building codes in rural areas were not quite so common as they are today. The timing was just right. Lloyd Kahn has found some of the coolest buildings that resulted from that hiccup of pioneering in the modern era, photographed them beautifully and humanized the builders.

Kahn takes time out half way through the book to celebrate simply-built structures and the joy of encountering them by presenting a series of photgraphic essays documenting his travels through regions thick with soulful buildings. Do you find yourself slowing down when you drive past solemn timber-framed barns or ramshackle sheds? Lloyd Kahn understands you. He has thoughtfully provided a number of pages of 'barn porn' for the junkies among us.

'Home Work' is a great source of not only ideas but affirmation that other people are in fact building some wierd stuff in the middle of nowhere and happily living in it. Perhaps it will give you the confidence you need to finally take the plunge.

What? No hobbit hole?
By shyhobbit
Well, this book has everything in it a person could want. 'Cept maybe a hobbit dwelling. Of course, there's so much imagination and so many ideas, that it wouldn't take much to come up with a very comfy hobbit hole. Now instead of just retiring, I'm dreaming of coming up with something unique that I can work on after I retire. And somehow I find myself coming back to this book for more and more ideas.... this book's dangerous!!!

New York rule number 1: Don't make eye contact....

Samantha Leiffer has a self-centered self-help guru for a mother, a cadre of off-kilter Greenwich Village pals, and an ambisexually-cheating ex-boyfriend. She doesn't need more grief. Then she spies two people dumping a dubious-looking ice chest into the Hudson River, and she has a chilling hunch about what's inside.

Not being the kind of girl to let two psychos get away with murder, Sam sets out to unravel a mystery - and is soon being stalked by a sinister, shadowy figure who's wearing one-of-a-kind mirrored contact lenses.

Now, aided by a tough (but still very hot) detective, Sam is poking into some unsavory places, and finding out more creepy stuff than she ever wanted to know.

Next Evanovich?
By Vampire Angel
I originally only picked up this book because the author has the same first name as I do. I didn't know if it would be a good book, but I was willing to give it a try. I am glad I read it. Samantha Leiffer has had a fairly normal life. That is, a life filled with arrogant, annoying boyfriends, ignorant parents, and low-paying jobs. She works part time at both a day care and the box office of a small performance theater, boyfriend-less, but content with her array of outrageous friends. From a gay guy named Yale St. Germaine, to a mute actress named Hermyn, each of her acquaintances are comedic in their own way.

Samantha's life was good, uncomplicated, until the night she witnessed two people dumping a dubious-looking ice chest into the Hudson River. It turns out that she has witnessed the aftermath of a murder by a serial killer, and the killer is not about to let Samantha live. Racing against the clock, Samantha has to figure out who the killer is before he or she kills again, before Samantha herself becomes the next victim. In Samantha's corner is the lovable Yale St. Germaine, the sexy(but sensitive) homicide cop named Krull, and a host of slippery characters from all over New York, each ready to do anything to stop another child's death.

I am not the best at plot summaries, so don't be turned off from this book just because you don't like my summary. Give the book a chance, you just might like it. I have to say, I was a little disappointed with the ending, however the rest of the book makes it a worth-while read. The characters are all interesting, the plot is smattered with plot twists, and the humor has a Janet Evonovich-ish air to it. So if you like Stephanie Plum, but don't know what to read next, try Alison Gaylin.

A thriller with a sense of humor
By S. Kolberg
It's not often that a book about a serial killer can make you laugh out loud, but this one does. Hide Your Eyes is like a roller coaster ride. It's scary, but it's huge fun at the same time. The heroine of the book, Samantha, is smart and funny and someone you want to spend time with long after you're done reading. The book is filled with memorable characters, from Samantha's odd and oddly touching cohorts at the theater box office in which she works, to the sexy cop she must convince to take her seriously. When Samantha, also a part-time nursery school teacher, sees something she isn't meant to witness, she has a hard time getting either her friends or the police to believe her. But when strange things begin to happen to her and evidence of crimes begin to mount, it's obvious that she's next in the killer's line of sight. This is an excellent debut from a talented newcomer.

terrific psychological suspense thriller
By A Customer
Samantha Leiffer moved from California to Manhattan to be with her boyfriend who turned out to be cheating on her with men and women. She stays in New York and holds two jobs, one as a teacher at the Sunny Side Nursery School and the other at the Off-Broadway Space Theatre's box office. One day she takes a walk by the Hudson River and sees a man and a coatless woman toss an ice chest into the water. Sam has a real bad feeling about the scene.

Strange things begin happening to Sam. A word is printed in her book that she reads to her students. She finds a picture of her mother with her eyes pried out. A one word email arrives at her computer at the Space Theater. The police find the ice chest; inside is a three year old child with her eyes cut out. The killer escalates his attacks on Sam and more children die. Sexy Detective John Krull has her stay in his apartment and under his guard because it is clear that the killer wants her as his next victim..

The story starts out offbeat, funny and lighthearted as the heroine copes with the radical changes in her life and her runaway imagination. HIDE YOUR EYES gets scary very quickly as Samantha's imagination becomes real and the killer is stalking her and innocent children. The tension soars to unbearable levels and not even Sam's romantic affair with Detective Krull is enough to stop readers form wanting to know what the killer will do next. Allison Gaylin is a bright new star in the psychological suspense and thriller horizons.

Save your Money
By DuckFan
Don't waste your money on this book or it's Volume 2. From what I can tell there is very little original material worth paying for. The Authors have simply compiled formulas that you can get for free on the web. They do not add any of their own personal insight or further information or knowledge on the formulas other than writing them down. Some of the formulas were not even translated into English so without a translation they are useless. What a joke. The charge alot of money for the book and don't even go to the effort of having the formulas translated for their English readers. What a waste of money.

What the "Author" has done here is take material already published by other sources ( most of it available for free and made a cheap-o compendium of other peoples material. There is no original thought in this product. If it wasn't self published it wouldn't have been published at all.
if you are seeking information on Chinese Herbs and herbal formulas, I suggest you go to an actual expert in the subject.

Although some of the formulas have thier value. Not worth the money as you could put together a similar list from the Internet. Why didnt I ?The same reason as others who purchased. Thinking this might have been different. Worth half the price.

That Used to Be Us: How America Fell Behind in the World It Invented and How We Can Come Back, by Thomas L. Friedman, Michael Mandelbaum

A New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice
A Los Angeles Times Best Book of 2011

In That Used to Be Us, Thomas L. Friedman and Michael Mandelbaum analyze the four major challenges we face as a country---globalization, the revolution in information technology, chronic deficits, and our pattern of energy consumption---and spell out what we need to do now to preserve American power in the world. The end of the Cold War blinded the nation to the need to address these issues seriously, and China's educational successes, industrial might, and technological prowess in many ways remind us of a time when "that used to be us." But Friedman and Mandelbaum show how America's history, when properly understood, offers a five-part formula for prosperity that will enable us to cope successfully with the challenges we face. That Used to Be Us is both a searching exploration of the American condition today and a rousing manifesto for American renewal.

Introduction: Growing Up in America
A reader might ask why two people who have devoted their careers to writing about foreign affairs—one of us as a foreign correspondent and columnist at The New York Times and the other as a professor of American foreign policy at The Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies—have collaborated on a book about the American condition today. The answer is simple. We have been friends for more than twenty years, and in that time hardly a week has gone by without our discussing some aspect of international relations and American foreign policy. But in the last couple of years, we started to notice some- thing: Every conversation would begin with foreign policy but end with domestic policy—what was happening, or not happening, in the United States. Try as we might to redirect them, the conversations kept coming back to America and our seeming inability today to rise to our greatest challenges.
This situation, of course, has enormous foreign policy implications. America plays a huge and, more often than not, constructive role in the world today. But that role depends on the country’s social, political, and economic health. And America today is not healthy—economically or politically. This book is our effort to explain how we got into that state and how we get out of it.
We beg the reader’s indulgence with one style issue. At times, we include stories, anecdotes, and interviews that involve only one of us. To make clear who is involved, we must, in effect, quote ourselves: “As Tom recalled . . .” “As Michael wrote . . .” You can’t simply say “I said” or “I saw” when you have a co-authored book with a lot of reporting in it.
Readers familiar with our work know us mainly as authors and commentators, but we are also both, well, Americans. That is important, because that identity drives the book as much as our policy interests do. So here are just a few words of introduction from each of us—not as experts but as citizens.Tom: I was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and was raised in a small suburb called St. Louis Park—made famous by the brothers Ethan and Joel Coen in their movie A Serious Man, which was set in our neighbor- hood. Senator Al Franken, the Coen brothers, the Harvard political philosopher Michael J. Sandel, the political scientist Norman Ornstein, the longtime NFL football coach Marc Trestman, and I all grew up in and around that little suburb within a few years of one another, and it surely had a big impact on all of us. In my case, it bred a deep optimism about America and the notion that we really can act collectively for the common good.
In 1971, the year I graduated from high school, Time magazine had a cover featuring then Minnesota governor Wendell Anderson holding up a fish he had just caught, under the headline “The Good Life in Minnesota.” It was all about “the state that works.” When the senators from your childhood were the Democrats Hubert Humphrey, Walter Mondale, and Eugene McCarthy, your congressmen were the moderate Republicans Clark MacGregor and Bill Frenzel, and the leading corporations in your state—Dayton’s, Target, General Mills, and 3M—were pioneers in corporate social responsibility and believed that it was part of their mission to help build things like the Tyrone Guthrie Theater, you wound up with a deep conviction that politics really can work and that there is a viable political center in American life.
I attended public school with the same group of kids from K through 12. In those days in Minnesota, private schools were for kids in trouble. Private school was pretty much unheard of for middle-class St. Louis Park kids, and pretty much everyone was middle-class. My mom en- listed in the U.S. Navy in World War II, and my parents actually bought our home thanks to the loan she got through the GI Bill. My dad, who never went to college, was vice president of a company that sold ball bearings. My wife, Ann Friedman, was born in Marshalltown, Iowa, and was raised in Des Moines. To this day, my best friends are still those kids I grew up with in St. Louis Park, and I still carry around a mental image—no doubt idealized—of Minnesota that anchors and informs a lot of my political choices. No matter where I go—London, Beirut, Jerusalem, Washington, Beijing, or Bangalore—I’m always looking to rediscover that land of ten thousand lakes where politics actually worked to make people’s lives better, not pull them apart. That used to be us. In fact, it used to be my neighborhood. Michael: While Tom and his wife come from the middle of the country, my wife, Anne Mandelbaum, and I grew up on the two coasts—she in Manhattan and I in Berkeley, California. My father was a professor of anthropology at the University of California, and my mother, after my two siblings and I reached high school age, became a public school teacher and then joined the education faculty at the university that we called, simply, Cal.
Although Berkeley has a reputation for political radicalism, during my childhood in the 1950s it had more in common with Tom’s Minneapolis than with the Berkeley the world has come to know. It was more a slice of Middle America than a hotbed of revolution. As amazing as it may seem today, for part of my boyhood it had a Republican mayor and was represented by a Republican congressman.
One episode from those years is particularly relevant to this book. It occurred in the wake of the Soviet Union’s 1957 launching of Sputnik, the first Earth-orbiting satellite. The event was a shock to the United States, and the shock waves reached Garfield Junior High School (since renamed after Martin Luther King Jr.), where I was in seventh grade. The entire student body was summoned to an assembly at which the principal solemnly informed us that in the future we all would have to study harder, and that mathematics and science would be crucial.
Given my parents’ commitment to education, I did not need to be told that school and studying were important. But I was impressed by the gravity of the moment. I understood that the United States faced a national challenge and that everyone would have to contribute to meeting it. I did not doubt that America, and Americans, would meet it. There is no going back to the 1950s, and there are many reasons to be glad that that is so, but the kind of seriousness the country was capable of then is just as necessary now.
We now live and work in the nation’s capital, where we have seen first- hand the government’s failure to come to terms with the major challenges the country faces. But although this book’s perspective on the present is gloomy, its hopes and expectations for the future are high. We know that America can meet its challenges. After all, that’s the America where we grew up.

Facts Are Good, Solution is Weak
By Barry S. Riehle
Friedman and Mandelbaum wrote a comprehensive view of how we used to be and how fast things are changing to leave us behind most of the rest of the world. Friedman was very clear that the World is Flat 1.0 means that, with new innovations (especially technology) all countries can have the same competitive advantages now, while the US dominated in the past. Now he claims we are at Flat 2.0, which means that each individual, thanks to technology, can have equal advantages by being able to cooperate with others across the globe without ever meeting the person face-to-face. The authors give a myriad of examples.
The most important component of the authors ‘solution is education. The US can put itself back on the top, or vie for the top by teaching students to think critically and use technology (and keep learning the new technology as it is invented). This will propel the US back to being the leader in the world economy.

As a former High School physics teacher I concur with most of what the authors but not with the authors’ solution to improving education. First, the authors assume schools are failing based on several standards including international test scores. My school had an exchange with one of our administrators and the head of the Shanghai school system. The Shanghai administrator, who spent a week at our school, told our faculty that while the US had a representative sample of all schools take the international test while China only allowed students from Shanghai, their best school district, to take the test. Not surprisingly the Chinese students came in first. There are other apples-and-oranges in international testing that call into question the validity of the test comparisons. Based on that the Shanghai administrator told us that we (a suburban school) should not put much stock in the test results because he saw firsthand that we were doing an excellent job.

Second, not all schools are equal, even among public schools. Suburban schools have distinct advantages over urban schools (more money; more stable families; parents with more education, affecting the aspirations of their children) and rural schools (size matters; a full time physics teacher can devote more time to a subject than a teacher who has to teach physics, chemistry, and earth science). This does not mean that all suburban teachers are better than urban or rural ones are, but by and large the various factors add up to advantages for suburban schools.
Finally, the authors want to make teachers better by incentivizing them with some bonuses, being resigned to the fact that we won’t pay teachers commensurate with their role in society. They believe that teachers will teach regardless of low pay because the want to teach. In the real world money matters, real money not just smaller bonuses for a few. School districts who can offer higher pay have a larger pool of candidates from which they hire. In addition, many who would like to teach and may make very good teachers choose not become educators because of the student debt they have accrued. When society wants to give the teaching profession more respect, including better salaries, teaching will improve because more good candidates will choose teaching. When schools can afford to offer teachers more preparation time the teachers will become more affective. Also, when schools can afford to have a longer school year and pay teachers for working 220 days like in some countries (instead of 180 in the US) education will improve.
It is a good read. I would encourage reading "That Used to be Us" and "The Myth of America's Decline: Politics, Economics, and a Half Century of False Prophecies" by Joseph Joffe as a counter. Joffe argues that the US will not fall off the planet because the US has been in this position before and has been able to adapt and move forward. The two books together can give the reader a more balanced approach to reality.

Should be Required Reading
By Amazon Customer
I will admit from the start that I am a big fan of Thomas Friedman. I believe that he has an incredible perspective on current trends that affect all of us and projects that perspective into the future. This book continues that "tradition" and we ignore its' contents and messages at our own peril.

Having worked in higher education for over 30 years and now in k-12, I have seen the way our education system, in general, fails to prepare students for the 21st century. We are still using, for the most part, an outdated model that is an industry unto itself. Without a world class education system, how can we compete in the world that Friedman and Mandelbaum describe?

The authors paint a somewhat gloomy picture of America's future that can only be solved by radical change from the way we are doing things. They have done a good job of summarizing the problems we face because of our broken government, backwards education system and general collective failure of our citizenry to demand better. While there is nothing here that any observant citizen doesn't already suspect, their ability to succinctly define the issues and possible solutions is what makes this book notable.

This book should be required reading for every high school and college student because they are the ones who have the opportunity to fix the mess that we have left for them.

That Used to be Us
By tobias
I have always enjoyed Thomas Freedman's columns in the NY Times, so I was not surprised by the material presented in his book with Michael Mandelbaum. In fact, I was somewhat bored by the warmed over sentiments voiced in the first several score of pages in this book. Later, the authors present a wealth of statistical information, buttressed by many interviews with some economic and business leaders, concerning what we are not doing correctly in this country and what we need to rectify the present situation. I was alternately buoyed up by the myriad of creative scientific and business people cited in the book, yet ultimately depressed by the authors' condemnation of our lack of will to reverse and obvious social decline. Their remedy, expressed in the last part of the book -- that we should be more creative and make many more start ups and that unemployment can be overcome by everyone starting new businesses -- may have some merit but is hardly likely to be realized. I left the book feeling somewhat pessimistic, not only because of the aforementioned unrealizable goals cited by the authors but because I think that that they, too, are pessimistic and that they concluded the book by trying to put a good face on a bad situation. It is a worthwhile book, interesting but probably with a limited shelf life, as social issues have a way of becoming old very fast.

Fibonacci and Lucas Numbers with Applications, by Thomas Koshy

The first comprehensive survey of mathematics' most fascinating number sequences
Fibonacci and Lucas numbers have intrigued amateur and professional mathematicians for centuries. This volume represents the first attempt to compile a definitive history and authoritative analysis of these famous integer sequences, complete with a wealth of exciting applications, enlightening examples, and fun exercises that offer numerous opportunities for exploration and experimentation.
The author has assembled a myriad of fascinating properties of both Fibonacci and Lucas numbers-as developed by a wide range of sources-and catalogued their applications in a multitude of widely varied disciplines such as art, stock market investing, engineering, and neurophysiology. Most of the engaging and delightful material here is easily accessible to college and even high school students, though advanced material is included to challenge more sophisticated Fibonacci enthusiasts. A historical survey of the development of Fibonacci and Lucas numbers, biographical sketches of intriguing personalities involved in developing the subject, and illustrative examples round out this thorough and amusing survey. Most chapters conclude with numeric and theoretical exercises that do not rely on long and tedious proofs of theorems. Highlights include:
* Balanced blend of theory and real-world applications
* Excellent reference material for student reports and projects
* User-friendly, informal, and entertaining writing style
* Historical interjections and short biographies that add a richer perspective to the topic
* Reference sections providing important symbols, problem solutions, and fundamental properties from the theory of numbers and matrices
Fibonacci and Lucas Numbers with Applications provides mathematicians with a wealth of reference material in one convenient volume and presents an in-depth and entertaining resource for enthusiasts at every level and from any background.

Review
[Koshy's] book is without doubt the most comprehensive and scholarly work on Fibonacci numbers to date and I am sure that it will quickly signal its presence and impose itself as an authoritative reference manual on Fibonacci numbers.
—Napoleon Gauthier, Royal Military College of Canada, Kingston, ON

What a gem this is! [...] My only regrest about the book is that it wasn't around years ago. It fills such a void.
—Monte Zerger, Adams State College, Alamosa, CO

wide range of results and many typos
By Jean-philippe Poton
Overall, this is a good book, covering many aspects of the fibonacci numbers, however, at about a 100USD, the potential buyer should be warned that there is a lot a typographical errors in the book.

While it is frequent to find a few notation's mistakes in every mathematics book, this one is way over average, most of them fortunately are quite obvious and easy to correct, but, in some cases, it simply makes the demonstration unreadable and the reader is better off working out the proof by himself; luckily, most of the proofs are quite elementary.
For the reader patient enough to go through this book simultaneously reading and correcting it, it definitely is a worthy repository of results involving Fibonacci and Lucas numbers.

In the land of the blind. . .
By Stuart Thiel
There's nothing wrong with this book, exactly, but it suffers from being too technical to be a popular book on Fibonacci and too breezy and gimmicky to be a mathematics text. It flits and floats and flies from sub-topic to sub-topic, sometimes visiting the same sub-topic more than once, without discernable pattern. While I have no doubt that that Koshy knows his stuff and his discussion in each sub-chapter is more or less correct, I wish I had a better sense of what's left out.

Fibonacci has always been a dilettante's heaven, and dilettantes need books, like Koshy's could have been, that give them a sense of what's known and what's not. If you're staring into the fire some winter night and suddenly go, Hark!, you need an easy way to decide if your Hark! is worth pursuing, and if so what's already been done. You don't need mathematical rigor, at least not beyond some bare minimum. You need to know if anyone ever bothered to work out a general formula, for general k, for the coefficients of a(0)F(i)^k + a(1)F(i+1)^k + a(2)F(i+2)^k + . . . + a(m)F(i+m)^k = 0. (someone did: see Lewis, More Power to Fibonacci, Mathematics Gazette July 2003.)

A one-volume (affordable) Fibonacci encyclopedia reliably answering the breadth question would be nearly priceless. Koshy's book is not it. You have to buy this book; there's nothing else out there, that I know about, anyway, matching its breadth or depth. And, I suppose Koshy deserves his royalties simply for stepping into the market niche where I was waiting. But there's something missing.

PS. People who know their stuff have warned us about the many typos in this book. I have found a few myself. So, test those Fibonacci identities before you use them, the same way you would test thin ice.

Good reference for Fibonacci and Lucas numbers
By Chris Varo
The author has collected a lot of facts about these numbers and a decent bibliography. The book can help senior math students (with student projects, capstone papers) as well as professional scholars who need a reference.
Here and there one finds mistakes and typos. For example, the conclusion of Theorem 12.6 on page 159 is wrong - the factor (-1)^n should not be there. The mistake is in the middle of the proof, where erroneously 1-alpha = -beta instead of 1-alpha = beta.
