Excellent & Much Needed

There are plenty of Self-Esteem books out there, but this one really handles the specifics of self-esteem issues. It is clearly written- even for a layperson. I am not in the field of psychology, but I found the book helpful in understanding how to deal with individuals in my own field. By understanding how and why certain individuals are affected by their own self esteem, I believe I can be more compassionate in my dealings with others in the workplace. Furthermore, I learned a few important things about myself and how I can approach success and failures in my own life. Highly recommended.

About the Author
Dawn Iacobucci is the Bronson Ingram Professor of Marketing at the Owen Graduate School of Management, Vanderbilt University (since 2007). She has been Senior Associate Dean at Vanderbilt (2008-2010) and Professor of Marketing at Kellogg (Northwestern University, 1987-2004), University of Arizona (2001-2002), and Wharton (University of Pennsylvania, 2004-2007). She received her MS in statistics, and MA and PhD in quantitative psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and her MTS from Garrett Theological Seminary. Dr. Iacobucci's research focuses on modeling dyadic interactions and social networks, customer satisfaction and service quality, and multivariate and methodological research questions. She has published in the Journal of Marketing, the Journal of Marketing Research, Harvard Business Review, the Journal of Consumer Psychology, the International Journal of Research in Marketing, Marketing Science, the Journal of Service Research, Psychometrika, Psychological Bulletin, and Social Networks.

Love this book. It has a variety of music, many of them the best loved hymns we grew up singing, in two versions. I've only been playing the harp for two years and its nice to have an easier version to play but it is also nice to have the second version to aspire to.

About the Author

terrible how humans can treat others humans

I have read both books , the gotti jr book is a compelling story about his fathers prison treatment, terrible how humans can treat others humans, tough to be a family member and watch your loved one suffer... As far as gotti JR speaking to his involvement in the mob falls way short, I thought he would tell the truth . His view is an insult to the readers. Alite's book comes off very strong , he takes blame for his crimes and speaks to the violence of the mob. When reading true crime , the reader wants the truth.. Alite explains his way throughout the book. The most telling for me was the report they call 302. JR Gotti has lied through out his book and in the press about not going into the police and giving up info about his cronies.Alite clears the air and exposes this guy for what he is ,a fraud..

Exposes the Gotti Empire as a sham

Great book. Mr. Alite really opens up how the entire Gotti family operated:self-centered, sense of entitlement and all-in-all "bad" gangsters b/c of John Senior's lust for publicity. Also portrays Junior Gotti as a fake tough guy who would run at the first hint of trouble. Junior has denounced this book as a pack of lies but it reads true: the author does not portray himself as a particularly good guy and seems to be telling his story as it happened. Lots of mob books read false,they do not capture the voice of the supposed wise guy author and omits the small details this book contains that gives it credibility. Fascinating read.

Great read for people who love gangster books.

Great read and fascinating stories. I don't understand how the previous reviewer could wish for law enforcement to "back up" every anecdote in this book- it would make for a much less readable book and anyway, the title says it is "the story of John Alite." I assumed it is up to us as the reader to decide what we believe or not, and to enjoy a great book while we do that. I really liked his tales, and trying to decide what I thought about them. And Anastasia's anecdotes about other mobsters in the same time period helps give things a reference point.

Unparalleled excellence!

How Flashbang Magazine's photographers gain unparalleled access to normally highly classified training scenarios is beyond me, but they do. State-of-the art weaponry and gear along with sophisticated battlefield and urban tactics are so clearly shown, you feel you can reach in and tap these operators on the shoulder! I don't recommend it though; they look like they mean business, and doubtless they do. Because these are photos of current elite personnel, some faces have been tactically covered, but you feel the full impact of anyone who would encounter these warriors for real.

Flashbang Magazine holds nothing back... I mean nothing! Most SF and SWAT units are very touchy about revealing too much about their weapons and capabilities; but here, you are a part of the team... even under water! I have seen special forces train and can tell you that it's all here. If you are thinking about going into the military, especially with a goal of a particular SF unit, or desire law enforcement as a career, this magazine will give you a bird's eye view of what you have to look forward to.

My father was a professional printer, and paper and ink are everything in print media. This is without a doubt, the finest tactical magazine on the market. The photos are taken with a level of photogenic expertise that takes the reader/viewer instantly into the scene. For those of you who picked up Flashbang’s first volume, you’ll be pleased with the second, as the author continues to use the same format as the first. Like the previous volume, the book is 160 pages with approximately 400 high-quality photos inside, and no adds.

The units are presented in a series of photos, along with a few captions detailing the actions of those presented in the photos.

As with the previous volume, I can recommend it to anyone interested in military history, law enforcement, elite units, etc.

This rollicking, highly original first novel tells the story (in reverse chronological order) of four sisters and their family, as they become Americanized after fleeing the Dominican Republic in the 1960s. A family of privilege in the police state they leave, the Garcias experience understandable readjustment problems in the United States, particularly old world patriarch Papi. The sisters fare better but grow up conscious, like all immigrants, of living in two worlds. There is no straightforward plot; rather, vignettes (often exquisite short stories in their own right) featuring one or more of the sisters--Carle, Sandi, Yolanda, and Fifi--at various stages of growing up are strung together in a smooth, readable story. Alvarez is a gifted, evocative storyteller of promise.

Doesn't Make It

Alas, the novel is difficult to follow. Characters are not alive in the pages: Papi appears as a cartoon of an inflexible patriarch, Mami a rather boring and trite nightmare mother, the girls difficult to distinguish. When the narrative lapses into stream of consciousness prose, the reader is left trying to understand when, where, and who is streaming. Early on I was engaged by the tale, but quickly became tired of bickering, undifferentiated characters. Like each of the daughters, I would want out of this family. This type of structure, moving from one viewpoint and setting to another, requires discipline and skill, and I don't think Julia Alvarez is up to the task in this attempt. Also, in this Kindle edition, there are scanning errors. I become less and less tolerant of this as I read more and more in the e-format. At $0.00 cost one might thing it's unfair to complain, but if the work is worth publishing, it's worth taking care with the details.

Nothing Particularly Memorable

I'm feeling pretty ambivalent about this one - I didn't love or hate it. Don't read it if you are looking for a conventional novel with a forward-moving plot and lots of character development. Do read it if you like experimental novels that do quirky things.

The book is comprised of a series of related vignettes that move backwards in time. They are written with such a degree of verisimilitude that I suspect they are largely autobiographical. Some of the vignettes are more interesting than others. I personally enjoyed "The Rudy Elmenhurst Story" and "Daughter of Invention" best. Others struck me as superfluous fluff - a quick way to add padding to a few really well-written essays so the whole lot could get published as a novel.

When I finished the book, I felt neither inspired nor annoyed. It was entertaining at times, boring at others. It certainly wasn't a waste of time, but I doubt I'll remember it in a year. Upon finishing the last page, I just blinked a few times and put it back on the shelf.

Oh, those Garcia Girls!

I enjoyed this book and related to it as one of five sisters, in a way I identified with each one of them and liked the back and forth way the story took me from present day to their past. Seeing how the perspectives about their life in the Dominican Republic changed from their childhood eyes to their adult eyes kept me engaged. It was a series of stories within a story. I highly recommend this book.

According to David Halperin, sexuality in our time is typified by a "crisis in contemporary sexual definition". What is sexuality? What does it mean to have a sexual identity or orientation? It scrutinizes identity and social structures that take heteronormativity for granted – that do not question the social construction of heterosexuality as normative in relation to its oppositional binary, homosexuality. At the same time, bisexuality is a practice, identity, and orientation that challenges the binary logic around which cultural notions of sexuality are organized. It is a portal to the imagination of a world of amorous expression beyond that divide.

This provocative collection presents bisexuality and queer theory as two parallel thought collectives that have made significant contributions to cultural discourses about sexual and amorous practices since the onset of the AIDS era, and explores the ideas that circulate in these thought collectives today. We learn much about the construction and experience of sexuality, and the power it still holds throughout the contemporary Western world to shape identities and practices. This volume challenges our understanding of what it means to be sexual, to have a sexual identity, and to practise the arts of loving.

About the Author

Jonathan Alexander is Professor of English and Chancellor’s Fellow at the University of California, Irvine, USA. His books include Finding Out: An Introduction to LGBT Studies (2008, with Deborah Meem and Michelle Gibson) and Literacy, Sexuality and Pedagogy: Theory and Practice for Composition Studies (2008).

Serena Anderlini-D'Onofrio is a scholar, writer, activist, teacher, and cultural theorist. Her book of ecosexual theory, Gaia and the New Politics of Love is a 2010 Nautilus Winner. She is editor of BiTopia (2011, with Brian Zamboni), Bisexuality and Queer Theory (2010, with Jonathan Alexander), Plural Loves: Designs for Bi and Poly Living (2005), and Women and Bisexuality: A Global Perspective (2003). Her memoir, Eros: A Journey of Multiple Loves, was a 2007 Lambda finalist. She is Professor of Humanities at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez.
