Who won the various wars, and why did no victory produce a stable solution? What historical, legal, and moral arguments does each side marshal to justify its position? Why have all efforts at peacemaking failed to date?

The Hundred-Year Struggle for Israel and Palestine opens with a general history of the conflict, which is followed by secondary readings that illustrate and enrich that preliminary survey. Readings have been carefully chosen to express a variety of interpretive and political viewpoints. The introductory history also pursues a contrapuntal logic, stating―sympathetically but dispassionately―the arguments of both sides. Victor Lieberman graduated first in his class from Yale University and obtained his doctorate from the School of Oriental and African Studies of the University of London. Both an historian of Asia and a comparativist interested in patterns of global integration, he has won the Harry J. Benda Book Prize from the Association for Asian Studies and the World History Book Prize from the World History Association. Lieberman is the Marvin B. Becker Collegiate Professor of History at the University of Michigan, where he teaches a lecture course on the Arab-Israeli conflict.

About the Author
Both a specialist in precolonial Burma and a comparativist interested in global patterns, Victor Lieberman graduated first in his class from Yale University and obtained his doctorate from the School of Oriental and African Studies of the University of London. His publications include Burmese Administrative Cycles: Anarchy and Conquest, c.1580 1760, which won the Harry J. Benda Prize from the Association for Asian Studies; Beyond Binary Histories: Re-Imagining Eurasia to c.1830, which he edited and an earlier version of which appeared as a special issue of Modern Asian Studies devoted to Lieberman's scholarship; and Strange Parallels: Southeast Asia in Global Context, c.800-1830, Volume 1: Integration on the Mainland, which won the World History Association Book Prize. He is the Marvin B. Becker Collegiate Professor of History and Professor of Southeast Asian History at the University of Michigan.

Excellent text for those wishing to focus on the electrical protection of machines

I work in the protective relaying field, and much of my work centers around machines and protection of machines. I occasionally teach professional development courses related to the protection of generators and motors and I always recommend this book to my course participants as an excellent reference that focuses strictly on machine protection. The book covers all aspects of electrical protection of synchronous machines, and has a chapter on protection of induction motors. I find that it has a good mix of theory and practice, and lists many good references for further study. I use it as a reference for my job and to brush up theory and application that I may not have put to practice in a while. Highly recommended.

Good book but not comprehensive enough

The book is good. It covers lot of materials on protection of power generation plants. However it lacks the details in many subjects and how to apply the theory.

Santiago Calatrava is dramatic both in designs and his public persona. In 2004 he captured the spotlight at the unveiling ceremont for his design for the World Trade Center Transportation Hub. On a whim Calatrava got up and sketched the building, with a giant bird stretching its wing above it, for the audience to see. This latest volume on the great architect reveals a lot about his process and the inspiration behind his work. For example, his affinity for drawing the human form and winged creatures, which inspired his entry for the Church of the Year 2000 competition in Rome, which he didn't win. Of course, there are alsohis many successes, like the Puente de la Mujer (Bridge of the Woman) in Buenos Aires and the New York Times Capsule, a time capsule on display at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Wonderful book of photos and content highlighting Santiago's work

I bought this book for my daughter who is working towards an architecture degree. She was impressed with how well the book showed photos, and the content it contained. This book is truly a work of art in itself. I recommend it to anyone who is interested in exploring a top-notch architect named Santiago Calatrava.

Abby Green is one of those authors that can captivate a reader from the very first sentence. She has a knack for transporting you to a world of glitz,glamour and passionate love affairs,taking you a reading ride one will never forget.

In One Night with the Enemy she as certainly done it once again. The story tells about Maddie and Nic,two souls bound by the world of wine making,family fueds and old love.

Maddie and Nic had one of those magical stolen affairs we often hear about but then she discovers a secret about Nic and takes off ! Then eight years later she returns and Nic decides to set his plan for "revenge" into motion.

Set in stunning Argentina the author takes these two characters and combines the world of wine making and their families legacies into one of the best books of the year!

I loved the fire and passion between Nic and Maddie to the point of distraction and for me I did not want the book to end. The gorgeous descriptive writing by the author has the unique effect of not only allowing one to picture every person and location perfectly in one's mind eye but to have you actually wishing you were there so that you could grab hold of the characters and give them a good slap for the mistakes they make,but also have you crying tears of joy when it works out.

Nic was a strong,powerful forceful character to recon with and Maddie was the stunning beauty from his past that had to be dealt with at all cost. I held fast to every single word and could not wait to see how the author would bring the "semi sweet" Maddie and "robust" Nic together in true Abby Green fashion.

ANOTHER GREAT READ FROM THIS AUTHOR

When Maddie returns to Argentina to take over the vineyard that her estranged father had left to her in his will. It is to find the estate deeply in debt. Determined not to sell, she intends to find an investor.

Nic who owns his own vineyard, is determined to get rid of Maddie one way or another. Years ago they had become close but were torn apart by family rivalry and betrayal. Nic has not forgiven Maddie. When Maddie's attempts at finding someone to invest financially fail. She is forced to accept Nic's help. But there is a price he wants something from her. But will she be willing to give him what he wants.

Once again Abby Green gives us another highly emotional read. Full of passion and angst. With great characters and a fast moving plot, this is a great way to pass a few hours. Recommended.

The storyline really flowed. There was angst, but because they were both able to talk easily with each other, their secrets were laid bare without too much coaxing. Although he was the typical alpha male,I loved how his emotions confused him. She was also nice, but always too close to tears. Would definitely read again.

Comprehensive Contemporary Theology

Ricoeur's work in the areas of hermeneutics and theology has been invaluable, and the essays contained in this book are particularly poignant and accessible. His work on Memory and Suffering alone make the book an excellent purchase, and every essay attests to the irreducible nature of God, Scripture, and Theology in a way few authors have done. An excellent work.

Narratival Hermeneutics

I am not going to do a chapter by chapter analysis of Figuring the Sacred. Not every chapter was equally good. Some of his musings on Heidegger and Kant were interesting but not germane to narrative theology.

"Philosophy and Religious Language"

"Understanding a text is always something more than the summation of partial meanings; the text as a whole has to be considered as a hierarchy of topics" (Ricoeur 38). This makes me think of chiasms. The structure of a chiasm reinforces meaning. Meaning unfolds from narrative.

"Not just any theology whatsoever can be tied to narrative form, but only a theology that proclaims Yahweh to be the grand actor of a history of deliverance. Without a doubt it is this point that forms the greatest contrast between the God of Israel and the God of Greek Philosophy" (40).

Manifestation and Proclamation

This is the most important essay in the book and the one that causes much offense. Ricoeur opposes a philosophy of manifestation (ontotheology) with a philosophy of proclamation (Yahweh speaks).

Manifestation

The "numinous" element of the sacred has nothing to do with language (49). Another key element is theophany--not moments in the biblical narrative, but anything by which the sacred shows itself (icons, relics, holy places). This means that reality is something other than itself while remaining itself.

There is a correspondence between macrocosm and microcosm (54). This brings to mind the Luciferian "as above, so below" dictum.

Proclamation

There is a rupture--violent in the case of the prophets' war against Baalism--between manifestation and proclamation. The word outweighs the numinous (56). Israel's whole theology--and identity--was formed around discourses.

Per idols and icons: "We may say that within the Hebraic domain they (hierophanies) withdraw to the extent that instruction through Torah overcomes any manifestation through an image. A Theology of the Name is opposed to any hierophany of an idol...Hearing the word has taken the place of vision of signs" (56). God's pesel is the Ten Words. It is the only pesel he commanded.

Communal Readings

In "The 'Sacred' Text and the Community" Ricoeur gives a neat deconstruction of the concept "sacred," especially when applied with a book.

For us, manifestation is not be necessity linked to language. The word 'sacred' belongs to the side of manifestation, not to the side of proclamation, because many things may be sacred without being a text (71)

Ricoeur the Hermeneut

His reading of Genesis 1:1-2:4a is interesting, but more for the method than the conclusions. His essay on the Imagination is quite valuable in showing what "goes on" in a narrative. Many narratives in the Bible, particularly Jesus's parables, employ intertextuality which always forces an expansion of meaning from the text. In other words, it is "an object with surplus value" (152). Assuming that the Holy Spirit didn't write chaotically and randomly, isolated texts are now seen in a pattern and signify something else, something more (161).

Ricoeur then moves to a section on biblical time, which is useful for meditation. He summarizes von Rad, Cullman, and others. I won't belabor the point.

His essay "Interpretive Narrative" offers his famous distinction between "idem" identity (the god of sameness, the god of Greek metaphysics) and ipse identity (the God who is constant to the Covenant). He expands this motif in "Naming God." God's identity is seen in his historic acts.

Conclusion

While magnificent, it is in many ways a difficult read. He assumes a familiarity with Continental Philosophy (itself a daunting task) and even then some essays don't seem to have a point. But when he unloads on narrative he truly delivers.

A philosophical reflection on religious understanding

This book is not an easy read. I found it tough sledding in some places. But it's well worth the effort for those who are willing to stick with it. Written by one of the leading philosophers of the 20th century, it uses both analytic and continental philosophy to plumb the depths of religious thought in an attempt to cast light on the connections between religious texts (the word) and spiritual experience (the sacred). At his best, Ricoeur is brilliant in ways that invite us to go deeper into our traditions and to connect our traditions with our personal experience.
