A Love Story For Many!

Chrissy Fanslau tells the story of a young girl named Adonia who falls head over heels for a hunk named Luke. It's not every day that the girl gets her own dream guy but Adonia does. That is until a secret becomes known and rocks Adonia's world. Luke is the first man she has ever truly loved and cares about could disappear within the blink of an eye. Will she allow this secret to get to her? What is this unknown secret? I will not spoil things for you, you'll have to find out yourself!

The story is very well written, the characters are lovable as well as unique, and you'll not want to put it down! Perfect for YA readers or anyone else wanting to read a fantastic high school love story. Check it out!

Such a well written, fun, simply great book-I know you will love it!!

Adonia was NOT looking forward to the next 3 weeks. Her best friend was going on vacation and leaving her alone, and she had no clue what she was going to do without her. That is, until she met the Greek God of her dreams. His name is Luke and he's not only gorgeous but smart, sweet, funny...literally every girl's dream. And for some strange reason he chose her!
Adonia was on cloud nnine and couldn't be happier, but she senses Luke is holding something back. She's worried, but it can't be that bad....can it?

Chrissy Fanslau has written a book that draws you in so completely you tune out everything around you while you are reading it (no seriously-it totally happened to me!) and it really doesn't matter how old you are...My Best Friend's Brother is a book everyone will love. The writing is amazing, the story entertaining and captivating, and the characters are fun, believable, and relatable.
Fanslau crafts her story and her world beautifully. She drops you in the middle of Alaska and shows you the beauty and harshness of it. She puts you in Adonia's mind and shoes as she goes about her life. You see everything through her eyes as it happens, and it makes you feel like part of the story. Her detail and description let you see everything clearly but they don't distract you from the story.
Her characters are just as thought out and developed as everything else in this book. Fanslau gives us people, not just characters. They are relatable and believable; they have thoughts and dreams and personalities. They think and act like anyone of that age would. And they're just plain awesome lol.
Whether you are in your teens or are sometimes struggling to remember your teens this book will amuse and entertain you. I honestly can't think of anything bad to say about My Best Friend's Brother, and I can't wait to read the next one!

Wonderful and witty!

Luke and Adonia fall in love, and all seems to be going more than well. Until Luke starts acting a little off and she wonders what's going on. He won't open up to her, but one night she finally finds out the truth behind his odd behavior. She has no idea what to do. She loves Luke and doesn't want to lose him. She has a decision to make, but it won't just effect her life, but those of two people she cares deeply about.

I really liked this book! Favreau is a very talented and gifted writer, and My Best Friend's Brother is on my list of favorites. The cast of characters is well thought out, with all them complementing the story very well. I highly recommend!!

The formatting of the e-book is a disaster. The text does not fit on the screen; sentences continue off-screen, which makes it impossible to read this otherwise interesting if basic introduction to social science methodology and theory.

Learning opportunities

Although the book isn't quite new (basicly from 1991) it gives en easy and relevant overview of (still) central debates concerning explanations in the social sciences.

The books also have relevant examples, although it's too often historical, from Asia, concerning peasant economies and within the area of antropology. You can take that though as another learning opportunity :-)

The book is furthermore fairly objectice when it comes to referring various positions. Little himself is part of a seldom, but quite interessting, branch of marxism, which blends Marx, methodological individualism (of a sort) and rachional choice theory. Another learning opportunity - and you don't have to agree :-)

A well organized survey

The great advantage of Varieties over many other introductions to the philosophy of the social sciences is that it is organized like a traditional textbook. It is not written for speed reading, but it assumes no prior technical knowledge on the part of the reader. New concepts are properly introduced as needed. Lecturers will be pleased to borrow from its many detailed examples of the various forms of social scientific explanation. Fashion-conscious readers should beware; Little is concerned with more traditional social scientific approaches. He might be classified as an "analytical" philosopher, and he doesn't devote much space to anything smacking of postmodernism & co.

About the Author
Efthimios Kaxiras received his PhD in theoretical physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and worked as a Postdoctotal Fellow at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Laboratory in Yorktown Heights. He joined Harvard University in 1991 where he is currently a Professor of Physics and the Gordon McKay Professor of Applied Physics. He has worked on theoretical modeling of the properties of solids, including their surfaces and defects; he has published over 130 articles in refereed journals, including several invited review articles and book chapters. He has also presented his work in international conferences and workshops throughout the world, through more than 70 invited lectures. He has co-organized a number of scientific meetings and co-edited 3 volumes of conference proceedings. He is a member of the American Physical Society, the American Chemical Society, the Materials Research Society, Sigma Xi - Scientific Research Society, and a Chartered Member of the Institute of Physics (London).

Splendid work

As analytical and synthesis techniques become more powerful, it is now possible to examine and fine-tune materials at the atomic scale. Likewise, continual advances in computer hardware and software have allowed more people the ability to model processes and materials at the atomic scale. Consequently, there is a growing need for good textbooks on the atomic and electronic structure of solids. Alas, most of the relevant textbooks suffer from one or more of the following drawbacks:

1. There is too much math and physics for most people. In other words, there are too many equations, proofs, and derivations. This usually manifests itself in sections on quantum mechanics and ab initio modeling.

2. The texts become less an educational tool and more a showcase of the latest and greatest achievements by the author(s). This negative can often be spotted by looking at the book's table of contents. If each chapter is written by a separate author, then you can be sure that the text often end up as extended reviews of that author(s)' publications.

3. Not enough coverage of background information. The study of solids at the atomic level is being approached by multiple fields that usually have NO interdisciplinary overlap in education institutions. Examples include geology, electrical engineering, biochemistry, tribology, materials science, etc... Therefore, a book to serve members from all these fields should have a lot of background information in topics such as thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, crystal structure and defects, group theory, etc...

4. Lack of pictorial representation. A picture is worth a thousand words; and even more so if you are trying to understand microscopic phenomena such as bonding, dislocation motion, etc... Too many textbooks have too few, well-explained pictures.

This book by Kaxiras does not suffer from any of these drawbacks. I consider it the best book so far on this topic.

First, it is written entirely by one author, yet I could not find a single reference to any of his publications within the book. There was absolutely no feeling that this book was trying to review someone's work, or some body of work. Instead, the book read like a well writtent textbook.

Second, the topics are written for a general audience, with enough background information that undergraduate science and engineering students can understand it. Specifically, the first chapter of the book starts with the Periodic Table of Elements and explains why different elements form different types of solids. This is extremely valuable information for anyone who has never had a course in materials science, which probably means most chemists, electrical engineers, biologists, etc...

3. Lots and lots of review literature is cited- WITH explanations of why it was suggested to the reader for further reading.

4. I counted 1 picture per every 2 pages. That is astounding. Even though the pictures were B&W, I understand all of them. Every one had axes labeled, a legend, a descriptive header, etc...

5. Thorough and basic explanation of band structures. Too many texts spend too much time explaining the different methods of obtaining band structures (LMTO, LAPW, pseudopotential + plane waves, APW, PAW, etc...). This book instead provided a whole chapter on understanding a band diagram, correlating a band diagram with the geometry of a material, and the physical origins of band structures. This is prerequisite knowledge before any further attempts to understand the electronic properties of materials.

6. Justification of each approximation, along with accompanying successes and failures. This book examined the mean-field, Born-Oppenheimer, frozen-phonon, pseudopotential, and other approximations commonly used in atomic-scale modeling, and provided thorough, well-organized justification of each one, along with a listing of their successes and failures.

In all, I recommend this book to anyone as a prerequisite reading before attempting to do research on the atomic or electronic structure of materials.

Little disappointing

So - I have had my Gelli plate a couple of years and it is very addictive and I love it so pre-ordered this book with excitement. I am a bit disappointed though...while the book is well written, clearly laid out with great photos and step by steps, there wasn't much in it that I hadn't seen already online - particularly on the Gelli Arts blog and facebook pages. If you are new to Gelli plate printing this is a great way of getting loads of ideas all in one place, and if experienced gelliplaters want a technique collection too then I recommend this book, but don't expect any mind blowing new techniques. There is also a beautiful gallery of artists work - but again I found this a little frustrating as there were no explanations as to how the pieces were created, if I'd wanted a book of art I would have bought one - I wanted a book that was going to teach me lots of new stuff but unfortunately this wasn't it.

Must Have for Gelli Plate Printing

Joan Bess does a fabulous job introducing the reader to the addiction, oops - world, of Gelli printing. The book covers many many techniques and opens up the world of monoprinting. If you have a Gelli Plate you should buy this book and if you are interested in mono printing of any kind you should also buy this book! I've made my own gelatin plates and done monoprinting on acrylic and nothing is a good as doing it on a Gelli Plate.

Great ideas for using your Gelli Plate

Some of the information in this book can be easily accessed in tutorials and blogs online but some of the techniques are new and innovative. This book is great for someone just beginning to experiment with mixed media but not a huge ammount of information here for very experienced artists. The gelli plate is lots of fun and the techniques in this book further expands the uses for it. ****This review has been revised from my original comments******

I really just wanted to learn transliterated Yiddish. But this book only uses transliteration through the first third of its chapters. I was really intimidated by having to learn a whole new alphabet to learn to recognize words on my favorite Yiddish and Klezmer Cds. But after a week of regular reading in the book, Im reading Yiddish right to left in the Hebraic Alphabet. The cd's are helpful and have multiple people speaking on them so it helps get a sense of different accents, but i certainly dont use them as much as the book. I spend a little time on the BART almost everyday reading some of the book and I already feel so klug.

New, modern, thorough...an awesome book!!!

I got Weinreich's "College Yiddish" about 4 years ago and I'm still working away at trying to finish it...not that it's hard or bad, but it's a little...dry. The exercises can get tedious. Two-thirds of the way through Weinreich's book, I discovered "Colloquial Yiddish" by Lily Kahn and I have nothing but fantastic things to say about it. It's terrific to finally have a truly modern resource that treats Yiddish as a language that is still present today.

First off, I love the book's physical appearance. It's such a lightweight little thing with nice paper, and the font is really easy on the eyes. The overall reading experience feels light and pleasant, so it never feels like you're working hard to digest tricky grammatical concepts.

Speaking of grammatical concepts, I think it's wonderful how Kahn does not assume any previous knowledge of grammar terms (e.g. "nominative," "dative," etc.) but she does teach them throughout the book, so you come out knowing all the standard terms used in the more advanced literature on the Yiddish language.

The dialogues are so much fun! Each chapter has two or three dialogues centered around three characters: Khane (a new student in the Yiddish course), Rokhl (studying for a Ph.D in Yiddish literature), and Dovid (also wants to get a Ph.D in Yiddish.) I liked Rokhl best, and not just because we have the same name... I think it's awesome how even in the very first chapter when the dialogues are still quite basic, their distinct personalities are already obvious. The discussions are lively and almost always end with a humorous note. And you really do have to read the WHOLE book, because you will not want to miss the surprise ending of how their story unfolds! I really like that the dialogue topics are relevant to the modern world. For example, there's one where Dovid goes into a Hasidic store to buy a CD and discusses modern popular music with the shopkeeper. There's also a dialogue where the characters discuss security on the internet and social media sites. See? Up-to-date material!

The bibliography at the end of the book has a treasure trove of suggested resources, many of them online, for a variety of Yiddish-learning tools. I looked them all up and am thrilled with being able to listen to Yiddish radio, read Yiddish newspapers and online archived books... the resource list is absolutely fantastic and I thought it deserved mention in this review.

I actually read the book the first time through without having the accompanying audio, and then I discovered that the MP3's are available on the publisher's website, so I bought them and went through the whole book again for comparison. I guess I found the audio helpful for pronunciation purposes, but other than that, I think the book is capable of standing alone if you already have an idea of correct pronunciation. The CDs advertise "bonus" audio exercises that aren't in the book, and this is true, but there is only about one per chapter. I did, however, retain the vocabulary words faster when I listened, so if you have a more aural learning style, you'll probably find the CDs helpful too.

I want to comment on the scope of the book, both in terms of grammar and vocabulary. I'm really impressed with how much vocabulary is taught in those 15 chapters. I finished this book and tried reading some articles in the Yiddish Forward (a popular Yiddish newspaper), only to find that I knew at least two-thirds, maybe more, of the words just from "Colloquial Yiddish." Kahn chose vocabulary that is relevant and thorough, and doesn't shy away from teaching lots of Loshn-Koydesh (Hebrew origin) words. The grammar, too, is very complete. While reading this book, I saw that Routledge had come out with an elementary grammar workbook by Rebecca Margolis, and I borrowed it from the library. Believe it or not, I found that it was actually too easy and there was nothing in it that was new to me because the grammar coverage in "Colloquial Yiddish" already covered it all.

Yes, this review is getting long, but there's one more thing that deserved mention: the reading passages at the end of each chapter. They may seem frustrating if you're lazy (like me) because they are meant to be dictionary practice: they are sprinkled with words you don't know yet, so you get to look those up in the glossary in the back. At first, this seemed like a chore to me, but it really does make sense as a learning strategy. After all, any Yiddish text you pick up in the "real world" is not going to have a convenient little vocab list under each paragraph, so it's good to develop dictionary skills. And the reading passages are on all kinds of topics, so it's great for passive vocabulary building and recognition.

Have You Ever Heard of This Creature?

Personally I have never heard of this animal before and decided to check this book out. The book is laid out nicely with text and supporting images. The book begins with a brief in introduction to the Tarsier, their habitat and moves into detail about their daily life. The book then moves into the family structure and birth to reproduction age. Other aspects of the animals live, location and species are discussed as well.

Most of the images presented are fantastic; a few appear as if they were taken with a disposable camera. However, for the 50+ photos in the book, each one is worth looking at. Sometimes the images on the same page with text didn't correlate well or at all, however this did not distract from the reading experience. On my Android tablet I was able to double tap any image and produce it full screen, some images did not expand to full screen size regardless of double tapping or viewing inline with the text.

The subject matter of this book will not present to you groundbreaking discoveries on this species; it's not designed for that purpose. For a child of reading age or even a child you read to this will be a good experience. As an adult I breezed through this book and all of the pictures in around 5 minutes.

I haven't decided if this creature is cute or just ugly, but overall, my goal for this book was to walk away having learned something about a creature I had no idea existed. I give the book 5 stars because it was insightful, the pictures were great and the facts in this book were easy to follow without becoming dry or boring.

Such a shame for a book that seems like a children's book to have such an unethical practice

I've been doing a lot of research on Tarsiers because I'm Filipino. I was very disappointing that I recognized many of the images from Flickr and Google Image Search. Many of the images are Creative Commons but I didn't see the appropriate Author Attributions in the book. Such a shame for a book that seems like a children's book to have such an unethical practice. Of the 50 or so pictures, most are from indie photographers online and no specific credit seems visible. I was also slightly disappointing by the grade level of reading. The sentence structure seems good for kids under 7, but the word choices are clearly 6th grade and above. Most of the facts are available free on websites. This just seems thrown together as a money making effort. Very sad, considering this is an endangered species and could have been approached with more respect. I learned nothing I couldn't find on Google. The reading was dry and entertaining. Yes, education was accomplished I guess. But the whole vibe of the experience was a major let down- even for 99 cents. Don't buy this, just use Google.

The Lost Art of the Insult

Few would argue that some behavior is so abhorrent, it demands redressing. Regardless of justification-idiot drivers, impudent clerks, adolescents who have been spawned by the devil-we as a society simply cannot condone smacking the offender upside the head. (Admittedly, this decision is instituted only partly in deference to decorum, but also to the distinct possibility that said transgressor might be packing heat.) Since throwing the bric-a-brac can become prohibitively expensive, our only alternative is to let fly with a few choice words.

A Glorious Cavalcade of Euphemisms

This book is a glorious demonstration of all the terrible things that we can say about one other, spoken in the glancing hilarity of euphemism, and presented in a delightful concoction of erudition and etymology. Civilized people across the ages have gone to such lengths to avoid saying the worst, or to say the worst in more polite terms, and this book brings to bear more scholarship, thought, and whimsy to these words and phrases than was expected or thought possible, leading this reviewer to blush, giggle, and laugh out loud in the middle of a bookstore. Well-written, well-researched, and well-illustrated, it it marvel that the English language can express so beautifully the worst things in our nature to express. Sex, old age, excrement, pregnancy, and drunkenness are just a few of the topics treated euphemistically.

Bad Book

Hated this book. Its more of a history lesson of where bad words came from and what they used to be called back in the day so basically you can now say them "nice" because she gives you the word people used back then and now they are nice becuase no one knows what the hell you are talking about if you use that word. So bad book if you bought it for what i thought the book was and good book if you like knowing where and why words came from. For sure, do not judge this book by the cover.

HILARIOUS, crude, perfect gift

I'll recommend this book with five stars, but warn you that it is definitely crude, which is why it was the perfect gift for my dad. Not recommended for those with a flat sense of humor, or for those offended by language. But for everyone who enjoys a good laugh, this is a great book. All of the adults sat around after Christmas reading snippets out of the book and doubling over in laughter. Great, great buy.
