About the Author

Ta-Pei Cheng, Professor Emeritus, University of Missouri - St. Louis

Ta-Pei Cheng is a particle physics theorist. After graduating from Dartmouth College, he obtained his PhD at Rockefeller University with the noted physicist and Einstein biographer Abraham Pais. During 1973-2007 he was on the faculty at University of Missouri - St. Louis, where he now holds the rank of Professor Emeritus. Starting the early 1980's Oxford University Press has published a number of his books, the most recent one being "Einstein's Physics: Atoms, Quanta, and Relativity - Derived, Explained, and Appraised".

This book is awesome! LOVE LOVE LOVE the pop up Kaba!

Every kid (and grown up) loves pop up books! And this is the first Islamic pop up book about the famous Story of the Elephants - Surah Al-Fil .

About the Story:
The first page has a prologue which consists of an Ayah from Surah Ibrahim (14:35) telling us the dua Prophet Abraham made after he finished building the Kaba with his son Prophet Ismael.

The story starts with a small introduction on how Abraha became the ruler of Yemen and built a church to compete with the Kaba. It continues with how Abraha sent the army of elephants to Mecca and captured 200 camels belonging to Abdul Mutalib - leader of the Quraysh, and the response of Abdul Mutalib when he was called to see Abraha. The story also includes the dua Abdul Mutalib made to Allah, how Mahmud the elephant would keep sitting down when he was ordered to attack the kaba, and the flock of birds defeating the army of the elephant.

The story concludes with a page about how Allah protects the Kaba to this day, and how that year is known as the year of the Elephant and that Prophet Muhammed was born in this year. (This page is awesome! LOVE LOVE LOVE the pop up Kaba!)

At the end the author summarizes three points we learn from this Surah, about answering of duas, Allah's protection, and that we should control our anger.

Pros:
1. The story is well written in simple words for little kids to understand easily
2. The story includes ayahs from the Quran so kids will be learning a bit of the Quran.
3. There's a pop up or interactive flap and pull tab activity on every page to keep the kids intrigued.
4. It has an English translation of Surah Fil.
5. The pages are made of high quality glossy paper.
6. There's a small 10 question Quiz at the end.
7. This book also includes an activity game for the kids to play. They can color the press out the elephants pieces.

Cons:
There are none!

Would we recommend it?
I totally recommend it to everyone! The little ones will just love looking at the Kaba pop up, while the older kids (4yr and older) will understand the story!

My two year old excitedly screamed Kaba! Kaba! when he saw the Kaba pop up. Other kids have loved the page with the elephants and the bird. And its just wonderful to see the kids faces light up when they see the book with such amazement. Very few books keep kids this mesmerized and fully attentive throughout the story. This book has been a hit among the parents too.

It's evident that a lot of hard work went into creating this book and it truly is a MUST HAVE for every child. This book is simply amazing and the first in its category.

Excellent book! The story was wonderful, the pictures were colorful and creative! Great and educational book for children. My three year old loved the pop-ups! Very well made book, would recommend it to everyone I know!

Great book for artists and enthusiasts

I didn't expect much from this book when I ordered it, but it was a pleasant surprise. It offers classic old school sailor flash, and classic sailor flash with a new school twist. Great variety: flowers, animals, dragons, pin up girls, vikings, transvestites! Humorous, beautifully done, there's something for everyone.

The graphics are Great, BUT...

I FOR one am ONE of those people who have pictures IN my mind from reading the SORCERERS RING series of what each character should look like AND I feel awkward reading a picture BOOK because THE Authors version of Thor AND MY picture of Thor are sooooo different...BUT IT would be great FOR someone WHO has NOT already read the whole series..

The good, the bad, and the concerns ...

I have read a significant part of the text versions, I think I managed to get to book 5 or 6 before I had to walk away. That said the graphics seem ok, a bit dark on my paper-white, and a little hard to read due to fairly small screen, and less than perfect vision. I can zoom in which makes reading much easier, if more unwieldy as you have to scroll about, but not too bad with the touch screen technology.

My rating is for the graphics and not for the story, which can be reviewed on the text editions easy enough on Amazon.

My concern is that these graphic books will literally be published chapter to chapter, and we are talking about 17 or so books with many chapters in each book. If Rice uses the same model as the text books you will be paying $3-$4 per chapter, for a story that will get very repetitive, very quickly. On the plus side this gives Rice the opportunity to correct spelling and grammar issues which plagues the authors works across many if not all of the series.

So... I got this free on Bookbub... thank goodness... I wanted to like this book I really did... the fact that there are a large number of books in the series is always a plus! But alas... I just can't like this book. First and foremost... if I heard that so-and-so had an immediate connection with so-and-so one more time I was going to throw-up. "He was like a brother to me" "He was like a father to me" " I fell in love with her more deeply that the deepest ocean" OK that last one I made up but it was almost as gaggy... I realize this is a YA book but, I like to think that the reading youth of today are a little more sophisticated than this. The plot was fast moving... a bit break neck but it was also all over the place... alas it is just not a book I can recommend to ... well... anyone
