A Great Value Pharmacotherapy Book

At a third the price of most pharmacotherapy texts, this is a real gem of a find. This books narrative approach to clinical drug therapeutics is both informative and pleasurable to read. There are very few medical texts that I actually look forward to reading, and this has definitely made the list along with Katzung's Basic and Clinical Pharmacology, Reinhart's Statistics Done Wrong and Southwick's Infectious Disease: A Clinical Short Course. I really love this book, but must mention its biggest downfall for an American audience. This is a British book, which means that lab value units of measure often differ with their US counterparts, and the same is true for many or the generic drug names.

One of the two best books on Shakespeare

As a Shakespeare scholar, I have read countless books on my favorite writer. Two books stand out as the best: John Dover Wilson's "What Happens in Hamlet?" and Caroline Spurgeon's "Shakespeare's Imagery." If I could only keep two Shakespeare books in my library, I would choose these. Dr. Spurgeon spent ten years sifting through the entire Shakespeare canon and pulling out every metaphor and simile she could find. Then, she organized them into like groups. This offered her, and us through her writing, an insight into Shakespeare's creative genius. With evidence in hand, Dr. Spurgeon explored how Shakepeare's mind actually worked; she uncovered his patterns of creative thinking. His abundant use of garden and household images and his relatively few uses of classical or scholarly images show us a writer more in touch with the real everyday world. His childhood homelife, the images one tends to carry throughout one's life, become crystal clear when set side by side in this fashion. In Spurgeon's book, we clearly see that the works of Shakespeare had to have been written by Shakespeare, who was born in small town Stratford, and not the works of a university trained dramatist or a member of Queen Elizabeth's court. It is fascinating to see Shakespeare's images compared and contrasted to those of Marlowe, Dekker, and Johnson. Each writer thought and created images in a unique manner. Seeing and understanding the differences, as expertly explained by Dr. Spurgeon, gives one a deeper insight into and appreciation of one of the greatest minds of all time. If you love Shakespeare then do not miss reading this book.

Scholarly research at its best

Caroline Spurgeon's "Shakespeare's Imagery and What It Tells Us" is one of the books you'll most definitely find on the Shakespeare students' bookshelf, and for good reason: nobody outlines the visual images, themes, and motifs in Shakespeare's plays as well as Spurgeon does.
Furthermore, Spurgeon doesn't outline themes on a play-by-play basis; instead, she takes a particular image and tells us about ALL of the ways it appears in ANY of the plays. Example: she outlines dream imagery in Richard II, Winter's Tale, Henry VIII, and Romeo and Juliet. This may sound a little confusing, and indeed can be, but it allows a real glimpse into Shakespeare's mind, and allows the reader to see common threads in all of the plays.
Also intriguing are the detailed charts in the back of the book that give a visual reference of how prevalent certain images are in Shakespeare's plays: for instance, one chart shows how prevalent sickness, disease, and medicine are in each of the plays.
Spurgeon did an amazing amount of work in order to complete this book, and it shows--it's one of the most thorough references available, and it is invaluable to the Shakespeare student, teacher, or scholar. Spurgeon didn't cover EVERYTHING--who could?--and a true scholar might find himself noting what's absent at times. Also, the reading can be a bit boring at times, but it always picks back up quickly, and it really highlights the machinations of Shakespeare's mind. Highly recommended!

This is an innocent book, no scholarly posing (though she is, no doubt, a scholar)... It's a very readable book as well... In fact it's a devourable book... Plays are obviously short on description and description is the most edible part of imaginative writing, so to have all of Shakespeare's imagery for metaphor and symbol and so forth all together right in front of you is very attractive and appetite, if not lust, inducing... She also creatively categorizes everything and compares it all in different ways including comparisons with contemporaries like Marlowe and Jonson and Bacon... A very interesting and delightful Shakespeare (and language) book...

I had read the author's other books in the past so I was pleased to see there was a new story out. I wasn't disappointed! It's a great story, yet again. I read it in one sitting as I just couldn't put it down. the bullying scenes moved me to tears. If you have bullying memories, this book will move you too because it all seems so raw and real. And how could someone bully a disabled child? It makes you despair at human nature. I'm so glad Kate found the courage to tell her story and I wish her luck.

Successor to Secrets of Opening Surprises Series

Lowinger's "Opening Originals" fills a gap left since the "Secrets of Opening Surprises" series has not seen a new entry since 2012. Fifteen opening sidelines, ranging from somewhat to extremely offbeat, are presented with an average of 7 annotated games each. Furthermore those games range from historical, such as very first game of the very first chapter, which features the inventor of a variation playing against one of the greatest past chess theoreticians, to games played within the last decade or less.

If you google for "lowinger opening originals excerpt pdf" the first result will contain the table of contents. You will find it heavily slanted toward 1.e4, which is the first move of ten of the fifteen opening variations. If this does not work for you, you might be further put off by more typos than should have made it to print, for instance in introductory remarks to the chapter on "1.e4 d5 2.ed Qxd5 3.Nf3!?", not once, but twice, 2.Nf3 is referred to. So the book could have used better editing, but unlike the Secrets of Opening Surprises series, it's entirely the work of one author, rather than one author per chapter -- that had to have made it harder to assemble.

As a 1.e4 player I definitely foresee using 3 or 4 of these lines in the near future, and am quite pleased with this book.

To see how a good opening book should be done

I found this book every bit as disappointing as his earlier one on the Center Counter. To see how a good opening book should be done, compare it to the marvelous one by GM Smerdon on the Scandinavian (2...Nf6 line) -- which I can highly recommend for its thoroughness, originality, and practicality. Alas, in Lowinger's poor effort there are no theory sections. The format is the lazy man's one of throwing in a bunch of annotated games, with the inevitable result that the coverage is incomplete, and a lot of space wasted. Still I applaud the author for his interest and passion for offbeat stuff, but can't in good faith recommend this book for active tournament players since the coverage of recommended lines is so cursory.

Interesting & effective lines that should challenge "booked-up" opponents....Annotated games, ranging from the author's to world class players, illustrate important themes for the non-master. I have already notched several wins thanks to this book. Lowinger's explanations are thorough & engaging, especially concerning transition to the middle game. The author obviously has a considerable amount of teaching experience.

A rich display of the Christian tradition’s reading of Scripture
 
Though well-known and oft-repeated, the advice to read the Bible “like any other book” fails to acknowledge that different books call for different kinds of reading. The voice of Scripture summons readers to hear and respond to its words as divine address. Not everyone chooses to read the Bible on those terms, but in Reading Sacred Scripture Stephen and Martin Westerholm (father and son) invite their readers to engage seriously with a dozen major Bible interpreters — ranging from the second century to the twentieth — who have been attentive to Scripture’s voice.
 
After expertly setting forth pertinent background context in two initial chapters, the Westerholms devote a separate chapter to each interpreter, exploring how these key Christian thinkers each understood Scripture and how it should be read. Though differing widely in their approaches to the text and its interpretation, these twelve select interpreters all insisted that the Bible is like no other book and should be read accordingly.

About the Author
Stephen Westerholm is professor of early Christianity at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario. Among his previous books are Justification Reconsidered: Rethinking a Pauline Theme and Perspectives Old and New on Paul: The “Lutheran” Paul and His Critics.
 
Martin Westerholm is lecturer in systematic theology at Durham University, England, and author of The Ordering of the Christian Mind: Karl Barth and Theological Rationality.
