Excellent book for game desingers

I received Characteristics of Games as a birthday gift from a fellow game designer, and I fell in love with it. The authors strike a very inclusive tone with their review of games, ranging from classic games like chess to traditional board games like Monopoly to modern board games like Puerto Rico, plus "games" as diverse as poker, Magic: The Gathering, basketball, StarCraft and crossword puzzles.

Their goal is to describe the characteristics of these games rather than prescribe the "right" way to build a game. Some of their best insights include:
- The importance of heuristics, at both an entry level to help new players get going and at an advanced level to help experienced players stay engaged
- A discussion of player elimination in games, from strict elimination to logical elimination (no chance to win) to effective elimination (no realistic chance to win), and the way these make players feel
- Fantastic analysis of snowball effects (the winner builds on a lead) and catch up effects (trailing players get an advantage)
- An excellent insight about Monopoly, not widely regarded as a "great game" by modern standards, but one that does a good job of keeping you interested on other players' turns since that's when the best thing for you can happen - another player landing on your property and paying you money

Characteristics of Games takes a scholarly tone and would be excellent as a textbook for a game design course, but it's highly accessible to anyone who loves games and is interested in their design.

If you're looking for a gift for a would-be game designer, Characteristics of Games is a winner. And if you're a game designer yourself, this is a book you really should read.

For Serious Gamers, Designers, and Reviewers

This is not a text on designing games, rather it's one on understanding them. It goes about this by establishing a common framework for discussing games, and examining the different characteristics that games can have.

Overall, I found it very interesting, and as a result of reading it some characteristics of games that I formerly considered to be either "good" or "bad" I now recognize as having both benefits and drawbacks. That alone was worth the read.

It is a textbook, but it's a fairly well written one, so not that difficult a read. There were a couple of times that discussions involved mathematical models that were beyond my rusty math skills, but failure to fully understand the math did not keep me from understanding the point at hand (rather, understanding the math would have likely simply made it easier to understand the point under discussion).

I'd recommend this book for anyone interested in serious game design or review, but probably not the average gamer.

Groundbreaking theoretical analysis of games

Most of the academic literature on games is either mathematical, focusing on finding optimal strategies, or sociological, focusing on the role that games play in human society. Characteristics of Games is neither. Its intended audience is the community of game critics and game designers—people who have studied hundreds of games closely and are faced with the task of evaluating them and determining what would make them better. Even though games have existed throughout human history, our vocabulary for discussing games is surprisingly primitive. Characteristics of Games plugs this gap by introducing a powerful set of concepts for thinking about, analyzing, and discussing games.

As an example, consider the common misconception that a game is simply a set of rules. Though it is undeniable that the rules of a game are absolutely fundamental, they do not by themselves determine everything about the game. How seriously the players attempt to win, how much work it takes to become an expert, and even how quickly the game is played depend more on the community of players of the game than on the rules themselves. Characteristics of Games provides the vocabulary for this distinction by introducing the adjective "agential" for the aspects that are player-dependent and the adjective "systemic" for the aspects that are not and depend only on the structure and rules of the game itself. Armed with this distinction, we are immediately better equipped to analyze a question such as, "Is poker a game of skill?" Naively, most people assume that the answer to this question depends only on the rules of poker; i.e., they assume that skill is a systemic characteristic of a game. However, the authors argue that skill is largely agential. Whether or not you agree, it is clear that having the right concepts to work with automatically raises the level of the discussion.

The authors identify a large number of important characteristics of games: downtime, spectation, kingmaking, standards, metagame, and many more. These concepts are not arbitrary but have been carefully selected based on the authors' long experience with, and profound thinking about, the key features of games of all types, from classic board games to sports to computer games. Whether you are a professional game designer or have a leadership role in a community that plays games or are someone who simply enjoys thinking deeply about games, Characteristics of Games will provide you with the cognitive tools to take your thinking to the next level.

This book tries to answer these questions, by providing a clear description of the building blocks of the Banking Union, and by showing that several issues remain unanswered. The Banking Union is a major step towards a more integrated Europe, thanks to the centralization of the banking supervision. However, it is far from being completed. 
The author discusses some controversial issues, that still need to be addressed at the policy level, among which are: the cross-country pooling of resources to manage the banking crises, the way to introduce a common deposit insurance scheme, the application of the bail-in rule to the retail bank customers, the methodology to carry out the stress tests on banks, and the attribution of the macro-prudential supervision. 

About the Author

Angelo Baglioni is Professor of Economics at Catholic University of Milan, Italy. He previously worked as an economist in the research department of a major bank. He has carried out extensive research in the fields of banking, finance, and monetary policy. He has written several articles in international journals as well as books.

Unique, Well-Told Viking Story, but Get the Sequel!

I love a good Viking story and sadly, too many publishers these days want only Regency or Victorian romances. But the Viking tales still call to me and I'm glad they are still being written. Here's a new author who is giving us great stories. This one is superb.

Renee Vincent writes with lyrical prose. It's truly beautiful. And she tells a good tale with attention to historic detail that will satisfy lovers of historical romance. This is an unusual Viking story in that there is no raid, no pillaging, no taking of women, none of that. No, our hero, Daegan Raeliksen, a wealthy merchant chieftain from Norway, is an honorable man who makes his home in Ireland. It is there he first sees Mara, daughter of an Irish king, riding her horse near the Shannon River, and it is there he decides he must have her for his wife. It's love at first sight for him. He only takes her from her lands to save her from a band of warring Norsemen. And, of course, then he must keep her until he can safely return her to her father. Daegan knows he should have permission to wed and to pay the bride price, but he can't wait to marry Mara and she's not complaining.

RAELIKSEN is a complicated tale of betrayal (Daegan has an evil twin brother), and deception with a few twists and turns you will really like. However, Daegan and Mara's love is never in doubt. The ending will rip your heart out so that you MUST buy the sequel.

This is going on my Best Viking Romances list and I recommend it.

You should also note this is first in The Emerald Isle trilogy. The sequel is MAC LIAM; and the third is THE FALL OF RAIN (a contemporary with a descendent of Daegan's but harkening back to the first). Due out in December 2012, is THE TEMPERATE WARRIOR, the story of Gustaf Ræliksen and Æsa. I can't wait for that one, as I loved Gustaf in MAC LIAM.

An engrossing love story that paints a vivid, yet authentic portrait of days gone by.

An avowed devotee of all things historical fiction, I have pretty high standards for what I consider a good read, and Ræliksen certainly qualifies. From her descriptions of the picturesque Irish countryside, to her electrifying depictions of swordplay and chivalry, Renee Vincent is an extremely adept storyteller who leaves her readers anxious to take in every word.

Ræliksen's characters live and breath on the page, especially its heroes, Dægan and Mara. The bond forged between these dynamic individuals doesn't come easily, and the challenges they face in coming together makes their story all the more real. I eagerly await the continuation of Dægan and Mara's story in the series' second installment--Mac Liam.

So if you're looking for a tale that effortlessly blends romance and action, while staying true to the historical record, I can't recommend Ræliksen enough.

"A RADIANT ROMANCE OF TENDER FEELINGS AND SWEET SURPRISES!"

The setting of this novel takes place in Connacht, Ireland 916 AD. As we reflect back in time to the Early Middle Ages, it was an era when Ireland was in turmoil, Irish countryside became a battlezone, and was eventually overrun by chieftains. It was a time when the Irish were warned about Northmen raids. A time in Ireland when there was much more at stake than just a claim on Ireland's flourishing port, and a time where a brick wall was created between Christian, and Pagan men. During this era, there were two sides to the Northmen, those who terrorized, and those who wanted peace in a feuding world. However, many of Ireland's children were raised to believe that the Northmen were murderers, thieves, and savages. These children believed that Northmen had no morals and values. Therefore, these children grew up fearing Northmen. Mara was one of these children, but despite all beliefs, nothing stopped her from visiting the River Shannon, which was her favorire place. She visited the river often, where she would sing the songs her mother taught
her. From the age of nine, after Mara's mother passed away, the River Shannon became a beautiful memory of Mara's visions of her Mom. No one ever knew of Mara's secret, except Daegan, who was the son of Raelik.
He would hide from her, but watched her many times as she sang at the river, while secretly falling in love with her, He wasn't brave enough to tell her until after he saved her life from a group of criminals heading to the river. At the age of sixteen, Mara began to fall in love with Daegan, but feared what actions would be taken against him when her father finds out. What would her people think, the daughter of the King of
Connacht, in love with a heathen? What challenges must Mara and Daegan face, after Daegan safely returns her home? The ever-rising hostility and outrage in Ireland existed, but not between Mara and Daegan. I recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys historical fiction with a blend of drama. The setting is painted with vivid descriptions of Ireland in its true beauty, the plot is electrifying, and the romance is sizzling. Renee Vincent painted the three great virtues of Ireland page-after-page, honor, chivalry, and love of freedom. How often did brutal attacks occur, and were all Northmen monsters? Will Mara have to struggle for survival after her father finds out about her relationship with Daegan? Will Daegan be executed? Will Mara ever fill the empty space in Daegan's heart, or will she run in fear? "RAELIKSEN" is as captivating as A WALK TO REMEMBER, and as inspiring as THE COURAGE TO LOVE with Vanessa Williams.

About the Author
Enoch Arnold Bennett, the son of a solicitor, was born in Hanley, Staffordshire in 1867. He was educated locally and at London University, before working initially as a solicitor's clerk, but soon turned to writing popular serial fiction and editing a women's magazine. After the publication of his first novel, 'A Man from the North' in 1898 he became a professional writer and some of his best and most enduring and acclaimed work, including 'Anna of the Five Towns', 'The Old Wives' Tale', 'Clayhanger', 'The Card' and 'Hilda Lessways' followed over the next twelve years. Soon after the outbreak of the First World War, Bennett was invited to join the War Propaganda Bureau, concerned with finding ways of best promoting Britain's interests. He was in good company, as others who contributed to this effort included Conan Doyle, John Masefield, G. K. Chesterton, Sir Henry Newbolt, John Galsworthy, Thomas Hardy, Rudyard Kipling, Gilbert Parker, G. M. Trevelyan and H. G. Wells. Bernard Shaw knew nothing of the Bureau, but attacked what he believed to be jingoistic articles and poems being produced by British writers. Bennett was the one chosen to defend their actions. He served on a War Memorial Committee at the invitation of the then Minister of Information, Lord Beaverbrook, and was also appointed director of British propaganda in France. His spells in Paris added to his reputation as a man of cosmopolitan and discerning tastes. After the War he inevitably returned to writing novels and also became a director of the 'New Statesman'. Bennett's great reputation is built upon the success of his novels and short stories set in the Potteries, an area of north Staffordshire that he recreated as the 'Five Towns'. 'Anna of the Five Towns' and 'The Old Wives' Tale' show the influence of Flaubert, Maupassant and Balzac as Bennett describes provincial life in great detail. Arnold Bennett is an important link between the English novel and European realism. He wrote several plays and lighter works such as 'The Grand Babylon Hotel' and 'The Card'. Arnold Bennett died in 1931.

The best way to deal with your self!!!

The Human Machine contains all that stuff which a person needs to know to have smooth relations with his peers and superiors. That is to say it deals with your self!!! The author teaches you in a persuasive manner how to get along with people in todays' world and thereby avoid many of the tensions/worries which you may have to face otherwise. The book is certainly worth buying.

Not Upto LP Standards

Lonely Planet Guides have lost their way over the past few years. I have been using LP books for 40 years but this book on Capetown and the Garden Route is a real disappointment. Compared to The Rough Guide, also bought recently, which is far superior and has better/more detailed useable info. LP guide is just about ok for CPT but has almost no info on the Garden Route. There is a lot of regurgitated info on the history/politics of S. Africa, comprising almost half the book; this I consider padding. I was looking for more detailed and useable info on CPT and the Garden Route - feel let down. Especially, when I compare this product to the products of a few years ago. I hope they go back to the old ethos!

Missing detail, not your typical Lonely Planet detailed travel guide

I purchased for my trip to Cape Town. I was very disappointed in the lack of detail in the book and local knowledge that is typically a corner stone of Lonely Planet books. The writers missed several key tourist attractions or when they it did cover them they were done at a very broad brush overview level. Their maps where hard to use and incomplete making it difficult to navigate without using another full map, we end up using the rental car map which was much better.

Nice job of providing lots of practical information for the tourist to Cape Town and environs. Although I'm finding this a great resource, it seems like it might have been a bit better organized, as information about sites is found in multiple places, and I was continually trying to figure out how different neighborhoods relate to the whole.

Delivers exactly what it promises.

Why settle for the best of both worlds when you can have all of the worlds? Mobsters, Monsters, and Nazis takes tried and true noir tropes and juices them with a sci-fi/fantasy setting and full-page illustrations for a promising serial that mashes classic entertainment genres and mediums together,

You've got your hardboiled detective hero and his femme fatale, you've got your tentacle-faced mafia boss, your lizard-man henchmen, and for a cherry on top, you get the villains everybody loves to hate: those uptight, genocidal, megalomaniacal, Nazis and their wacky world domination plans. Simple but effective.

The illustrations, length, price, and serial release format approximate the experience of reading a comic book while the writing itself is traditional prose. The story alternates between Steve Ferchaud's art and Dan O'Brien's storytelling page-for-page, which is definitely a different kind of format. This first volume is a very short read (again, about the length of an issue of a comic book) and does a competent job of setting the reader up for an adventure that could literally take you anywhere.

If you read the title and think "these are a few of my favorite things" and are up for some classic noir, than you might consider giving Mobsters, Monsters, and Nazis a go. It'll definitely be interesting to see where the story goes from here.

Author Dan O'Brien wows readers once again by introducing his new illustrated series

These days I can honestly say I never know where author Dan O'Brien is going to take readers. Over the books I have read he has transported readers into the lives of characters that definitely stick to you, pushing forward from chapter to chapter, unable to stop until the very end---and even then you don't seem to be able to get enough.

His newest literary adventure is a illustrated series that begins with MOBSTERS, MONSTERS & NAZIS. In it we meet Derrick Diamond, a detective that is a special mission that quickly goes awry, leading him to the one who enlisted his services and some action that involves a sassy siren named Ava that is not exactly what Diamond had in mind. Who stole the item he was brought in to obtain---and what is the purpose of it all? These are just some of the questions you'll find yourself asking as this first installment ends and you wonder just how long you'll have to wait for the next one.

That's author Dan O'Brien for you: he draws you in, gives you just enough to hook you and then shows who really has the power by leaving you anxiously awaiting what he has in store for us next. If MOBSTERS, MONSTERS & NAZIS is any indication this series will be another project in the win column for this talented storyteller.

Just what the title promises

Any fan of noir detective fiction will recognize the conventions and archetypes of the genre, but he might wonder about the monsters. Cthulhu Mythos fans will appreciate the monsters, but might ask, "Why are they dressed in cheap suits and acting like gangsters, and what's with the fez?" But both sets of fans will love the inclusion of Nazis. Who doesn't love Nazis? In a fictional setting of course. This short story is a fun little romp through a Lovecraftian milieu as Sam Spade might have envisioned it. If anything could be said against the story, it's that it only goes far enough to set up for a larger narrative, but that's a minor quibble that does not detract from the overall enjoyment.
