Lorenzo Candelaria (Bachelor of Music, Oberlin College, 1995; Ph.D., Yale University, 2001) is an award-winning teacher and author at The University of Texas at El Paso. He is the recipient of prestigious fellowships from the Fulbright Program and the National Endowment for the Humanities and was presented with the Robert M. Stevenson Award by the American Musicological Society for his book THE ROSARY CANTORAL (2008).

Daniel Kingman is an American composer and Professor Emeritus, California State University, Sacramento.

Probably the best college text for a "survey" of American Music

In the past, there was Hitchcock, Chase, and Hamm's books. They were all "surveys" in that they started with Native American music and the music of the early settlers and progressed roughly to the present. These are outdated books as far as the "present" goes, but they are each still very good, even if what they emphasize is different. Today, though, the college teacher has two options, Richard Crawford's "Introduction to America's Music" and this book, originally by Kingman and substantially revised by L. Candelaria. Crawford's "Introduction" is really excellent in every way. It is packed full of information with all points-of-view and arguments thoroughly influenced by the most recent research. He really knows his stuff. It's organized chronologically, so, like the books above, it starts with the settlers and moves forward. My students had trouble with this book, as did I, because it takes a full third of the semester before you get to any music that most of the students have even heard of. That's why Kingman/Candelaria is, in my opinion, a uniquely successful alternative. It starts with the four historically principal categories of "folk" music (N-A, Mexican American, Anglo America, and African American) and includes another chapter on more recent kinds of folk music from other traditions. As for many students the "real" American music is "folk music," this is a great way to start off the semester and gets the class really thinking about the issues that shape the character and content of music in regions that now comprise the U.S. After that comes Blues and Rock (which I separate because I think rock needs to come AFTER all the other popular music), then big units on Sacred Music, Popular Music, and Classical Music.

At first I didn't like this approach. But after using it I realize that, if properly supplemented, it is the ticket to a successful class. Students need to know that American Music has been around for several centuries and that we can't shape our understanding of what it is by just current standards alone. So I find the book to be very balanced. Yes, the section on jazz could be larger. And I think there musical theater gets short shrift as well as American popular music from the 1920s to 1950s that isn't jazz (as in the many famous songs that reflected changing American values over those decades as well as served as standards for jazz bands).

So this needs to be supplemented. But its still the best approach for many reasons. One is that there isn't a huge amount of reading (which most students just won't do). The text that is there is, for the most part, accurate and includes very important interpretive information. I think most students feel "informed" after reading the chapter so that they can listen to music, whether it's the shape note singing of Appalachia or barrelhouse piano style or the songs of Tin Pan Alley with some solid knowledge about where these genres came from. Yes, there isn't a whole lot of historical information here. But what there is is judiciously chosen. A book on American Music of four centuries that would include all the historical background would probably have to be about 1600 pages at the minimum.

So I highly recommend this. Just be ready to add some supplemental music. For example, I used some wonderful recordings of 18th century American sacred music that has appeared in the last 15 years, particularly of the Moravian community or of Billings and the New England tunesmiths. Also, I thought there should be more popular music from the period just before and leading up to the Civil War. THere are tones of recordings out there now of this music that are available, some even using period brass instruments.

Carnage abounds in this shocking account of the 16th-century Anabaptist revolt of M?nster, during which some 9000 residents barricaded themselves in the north German town for more than a year, proclaiming a militant, anti-Catholic theocracy. Led by the 24-year-old Jan van Leyden, a charismatic tailor's apprentice from Holland, the revolt quickly jettisoned its promise of a community united by voluntary faith, becoming instead a textbook study in extremism. The Anabaptist message, contends Arthur, was predicated on the appeal of the irrationalAsignally, a zealous belief that the Second Coming would unfold in 1534 in M?nster, where the loyal Anabaptists would wage the ultimate battle between good and evil. A master propagandist, the young, self-anointed King Jan swiftly ordered all books save the Bible consigned to a bonfire and even declared a new order of marriage: mandatory polygamy. Amply serviced by his 16-wife harem, Jan then loosed what Arthur (Bushmasters, etc.) alternately describes as a reign of terror and a carnival of madness upon the town, in which pikestaffs whirled and halberds raged against unrepentant adherents of the Roman Catholic Church. Both Catholics and Protestants opposed the Anabaptists, and the sect's contempt for temporal authority of any kind made it the object of persecution by Germany's powerful princes. Every revolution has a radical fringe, and the Reformation was no exception. The Anabaptists, who took over and created their own kingdom in the northern German city of M?enster, frightened even Martin Luther. Arthur (English, California State Univ., Northridge) has written an excellent account of the Anabaptist kingdom, which has not received much attention recently. His is one of the more readable academic histories in recent memory. Arthur deftly uses primary sources to craft a story that reads like a good thriller. His analysis in the final chapter is a masterly comparison of the events in M?nster to what happened to the Branch Davidians in Waco, TX. Any doubts about the importance of the bloody events of more than 400 years ago are erased by the parallels that Arthur draws. How could Waco, Oklahoma City, and Kosovo have happened? The sixteenth-century Anabaptist uprising in the northern German city of Munster, under the leadership of tailor's apprentice Jan van Leyden, is a fascinating story that has spawned many popular accounts in German. Its elements include the heroism, intrigue, greed, sex, and violence of a late-twentieth-century blockbuster novel, and Arthur's timing in presenting his account neatly coincides with the current bull market for apocalypticism, aka millenarianism. For the most part, Arthur draws on historical records and fictional accounts to recount the transformation of a protodemocratic uprising into a theocratic nightmare distorted on all sides by flawed and often unscrupulous leaders and followers whose hope regularly led them into gullibility. Arthur's attempts to draw explicit parallels with recent events and the Freudian framework within which he draws them are detractions, but they are restricted almost entirely to the final chapter. Although Arthur imparts little about Anabaptism, he provides a riveting story and pointers to other sources for reflection on the still important interplay of religious faith and theological and political authority. Living history at its engrossing best

The Tailor King is a masterful account of what happened both inside and outside the ancient walls of sixteenth-century Munster when Protestant religious fervor transformed otherwise intelligent and rational men into irrational creatures capable of unbelievable brutality. Readers beware - the graphic descriptions and concrete imagery bring the sixteenth-century fully alive. The characters in this book could easily populate a wide-screen, action-filled film. The author's meticulous research and gift for storytelling combine to create a rare pairing of erudition and page-turning readability. Like the narrator who seizes the wedding guest in Coleridge's "The Ancient Mariner," the author seizes the reader's attention and does not let go. His calm journalistic voice only heightens the "you are there" quality of the book. And his occasional strokes of subtle dry wit surprise and delight. This is living history at its engrossing best. The carefully annotated illustrations, culled from archives and museums in Germany, highlight events in the story and are a unique bonus. A well told story from first page to last!

Yet Another New Zion: Religious Madmen in Westphalia

While the threat posed to modern society by religious fundamentalism has been underscored by the events of September 11, "The Tailor-King" reminds us that suicidal craziness is not limited to some extreme readers of the Koran. This book is about the Anabaptist Kingdom that appeared in the prosperous North German city of Muenster in 1534-35, with disastrous results for everyone involved. A century later, from 1618-48, the Thirty Years' War would be the ultimate expression of European Christian religious and political madness and it is ironic that the treaty that ended it, the Peace of Westphalia, was signed in the City Hall in Muenster, ushering in an era of peace and prosperity on the continent.
Muenster is a solid, bourgeois kind of place and in the 16th Century it seemed equally so. An important trading centre, it showed its considerable wealth in its merchants'mansions and warehouses, its churches and impressive cathedral. The beginning of the Reformation saw the city split into Catholic and Lutheran interests, but it continued to function until a group of Anabaptists, regarded as heretics for their insistence on adult baptism, gradually seized control of the town. Eventually they drove out the majority of other believers and the ranks of Muenster swelled with Anabaptists from other areas, particularly Holland. A charismatic leader, a former baker named Jan Matthias, was one of these. He had been called to Muenster by Jan van Leyden, another Dutch Anabaptist, and a group led by a wealthy local merchant. Together they declared war on the local Prince-Bishop and were rewarded with a siege of their fortified town. Deemed heretics by pretty well everyone, Catholic and Lutheran, the Anabaptists were determined to hold out, seize the countryside and establish a New Kingdom of Zion.
Anthony Arthur describes the Company of Christ as starting off as a well-disciplined, effective organization and he gives us some background on the Anabaptist movement, which was divided into pacificists (Mennonites and similar groups) and the militants. As the siege wears on, the Company of Christ takes some strange directions. From a city council, it moves to a Council of Elders and then to essentially a religious dictatorship.. Property is to be held only in common, criticism is rewarded with summary death. All the church towers are destroyed. Jan Matthias challenges the Bishop's army to single combat, with foreseeable results, and Jan van Leyden takes over. He now makes polygamy obligatory and arranges to crown himself King. The people starve, when their leaders are not personally murdering them, and those who try to leave are killed by the Bishop's soldiers outside. The whole thing comes crashing down when the Anabaptists are betrayed and the city taken. Jan van Leyden and the other most senior leaders are tortured to death and their corpses put on display in cages that are still to be seen on St. Lambert's Church in Muenster. Interestingly, the cages are original, but the church itself is not.
This book is only 244 pages, but although Mr. Arthur has looked at many sources it is clear that he has had to make an effort to flesh the book out. There are some diversions into Freud and theories that the Company of Christ was a sort of proto-Nazi organization and a long digression into the biblical story of Judith and Holofernes. I doubt that the Anabaptists were particularly Nazi-like, but exhibited many of the characteristics of a totalitarian system, more similar to Chinese Communism in its most irrational phases. And irrational it truly was-reading this book, one cannot reconcile the good burghers of Northern Germany, with their dull but solid reputation, with this lot of passionate crazies. It is a fascinating story even though one senses the whole time that it can only end one way. Of particular note is the enthusiasm with which people are put to death, often in very imaginative and quite unpleasant ways, and by both sides. The Anabaptists, as they roll onwards into madness and calamity, are treated by the author with more sympathy than the Establishment figures opposing them. Receiving particular scorn is the Prince-Bishop, Franz von Waldeck, who is portrayed as incompetent, venal and luckless.
It may seem strange to us today that adult baptism, with its element of free will, could be the subject of such rage between Christians but one need only look at the fine points argued by religious fanatics today with deadly passion to understand that the more things change, the less they do.

The Next Best Thing to Being There

While the Harry Potter phenomenon at large is a property with almost an unlimited reach, the audience for a pricy collector set like this can only be a limited one. But when I set my eyes on it I knew I was one of those people. While not a devotee of the books, as a filmmaker I recognize the incredible scope of the work that went into each film. I bought the Harry Potter Page to Screen book immediately upon its release, figuring anything that weighed in at 531 pages would be comprehensive enough for my tastes. But to condense a decade worth of filmmaking into one tome risks merely skimming the surface of topics like costuming, props, and set design. I believe that the limited-run Collector's Edition expands upon these topics admirably (if not exactly comprehensively).

At nearly 40 pounds, the set arrived nestled in a series of cardboard boxes and was an epic unveiling, packed between black molded polystyrene bumpers like a hefty computer printer. The replica Monster Book of Monsters was the first out of the box, and is a nice collector-quality piece which seems to be made of heavy resin and fake fur, with well-done hand painted details. The numerous, tiny eyes are particularly good. The art portfolio is an incredibly sturdy piece, cloth-bound and gilded. The art they chose to print are not the most striking items seen in the vast catalog of production design generated for the film but are nice standalone items, representing a good range of subjects suitable for display, and are printed on a heavy, matte stock.

Each of the books gets a different "textbook-style" treatment in line with the series design, with attractive bindings and great quality paper and printing. Tons of spot varnish and classy presentation throughout -- though made in China like most print work these days. Most of them weigh in at 130 pages or so, with some as many as 150 pages in length. Of particular beauty is the Guide to the Graphic Arts Department, which showcases all of the incredible paper ephemera created for the series.

Is it worth the cost? When my wife heard the price, she nearly did a petrificus totalus. This is not for everyone. A wealthy Potter Completist will find an excuse to purchase it, but I would only recommend the set if you both are a Potter Fan AND a film design fan. If you are in the filmmaking and production design business, this is quite possibly a required set, as it must closely approximate being in proximity to the actual art department itself.

While most of the world is content seeing the final film product, those interested in the accumulation of detail and design that goes into the film's environments will not be disappointed by the wealth of concept work and photography that chronicles the series stunning and spot-on design work. Production designer Stuart Craig and company crafted a vast, beautiful visual world for these films, and it takes a package like this to do it justice.

Harry Potter Page to Screen -- Collector's Edition Review

[[VIDEOID:moZP23ALXWX60E]]As a big fan of the Harry Potter novels and films, I think this book this a fantastic one to own. "Page to Screen" chronicles the entire 10-year production of the Harry Potter movie franchise.

Everything about the movies is discussed -- including in-depth looks at the characters, locations, and various stories of the making of the movies. Author Bob McCabe does a great job highlighting the challenges of the production, the technical and creative innovations, and the visual/artistic achievements. I would say that my appreciation for the films increased after reading this book. In particular, the visual elements (costumes, props, set design, creature makeup, etc) of the movies are discussed in detail. It also helps that the book contains tons of high-resolution color images - including photos from the set.

For those wondering if the collector's edition set is worth owning, my answer is YES. In addition to the main book, you also get seven ancillary books. Where the "Page to Screen" book is more informational, these other books are more focused on imagery - they contain photographs, design sketches, concept art, etc.

Each book focuses on a visual aspect of the movies -- "Wizard Wear" focuses on costuming; "Movie Magic" focuses on props and visual effects; "Creature Shop Compendium" showcases the many creatures that appear in the films; and there is even "The Paintings of Hogwarts", a book dedicated to the portraits that line the halls of Hogwarts school.

One valuable bonus in the Collector's Edition set is a nice replica of the Monster Books of Monsters. It's the best-looking version of that prop that I have seen.

** This set is very expensive, but even if it is not affordable at it's current price I would encourage you to add it to your Wish List and check back often. I purchased mine for under $150 during an Amazon lightning deal, so they do put it on sale from time to time.

Best Christmas present to myself.

I got this during while the Cyber Monday type deals were going on on Amazon. I remember it clearly: Amazon gave a little snippet before the product was actually unveiled, something like "for every true Harry Potter fan." Of course, I sat at my computer and waited until the allotted time to see what it was. And when it was finally released, I jumped on it.

I won't lie, I handled each of the books with a hint of reverence; not something I'm proud of admitting, but true all the same. I don't regret buying it at all. Maybe that would be a different story if I had paid the whole $1000, but since I only paid $480 I could justify it to myself. It was totally worth it. The amount of detail is astounding, and I feel like I got a piece of the phenomenon that isn't available for everyone. The Page to Screen book in particular is already pretty in depth, but the added bonus are the others. Each of the other books has a specific focus: the sets, the costuming, etc.

Honestly I still haven't gotten all the way through the collection. I'm trying to take my time and enjoy each piece as I get to it. My loved ones are rather annoyed with me; I keep hollering out to them details about the Harry Potter universe. I don't regret the purchase at all, and I would do it again. While my allegiance is more to the books than the movies, I can't deny that I waited for the midnight showing on all of them when they were released in theaters. The amount of work that went into even the smallest of details--a wizarding advertisement during the Quidditch Cup, for example--are shown in these books, and it is magnificent.

It's a hefty price tag, but if you want to know as much as you can about the HP world, it's worth it.

A good introductory history

Pictures when appropriate (yes, in color), not too many pop-out boxes with irrelevant information like other textbooks, follows the history chronologically more or less and is very clear in terms of content. I used this book to supplement the textbook I used for my Roman history class and this book has made understanding the history a lot clearer. It doesn't go too in-depth, unfortunately for those who are looking for more depth (it is called a brief history after all). But it covered the history well enough and was a good refresher to read before an exam.

This is one of the best textbooks on Roman history available in English. New to this edition of "A Brief History of the Romans" are the following: Extended coverage by about 200 years, to approximately 500 CE (as opposed to 300 CE in the first edition); two new chapters: Chapter 13: "The Rise of Christianity and the Growth of the Barbarian Threat", and Chapter 14: "The Final Years of the Western Empire and Rome's Revival in the East"; chapters 1 and 2 from the first edition combined into a single chapter titled "Archaic Italy and the Origins of Rome"; an eight-page, full-color insert featuring 15 color plates; and more coverage of women, religions, and cultural history throughout. There is also a Companion Website that offers resources for students and instructors.

A Brief History of the Romans

I am over half way through a detailed reading of this book as part of a course assignment. So far the governmental/political aspects are covered in minute detail; not so other ones. For someone wanting to know how Roman governance evolved, it is extremely thorough. However, there has been almost no mention of the languages used and their development; same for the arts. Perhaps these are presented later in the book.
I recommend the book, especially for those studying government or political science. It reads fairly well as textbooks go.

Especially good coverage on instruction flow and branch prediction

As with most Computer Architecture books, this book covers a wide range of topics in superscalar out-of-order processor design. But what made this book stand out is a chapter dedicated to discussing advanced instruction flow techniques. The book had a very thorough review of many branch prediction algorithm, various types of target predictors as well as high bandwidth fetching mechanism. The book also has a very thorough coverage on the P6 micro-architecture.
